1 watt desk speaker

So im looking to build a cheap 1-2watt very small mono desk amp.

Something like a 50EH5 or 6T9 (still accepting recommendations)

What im really after is a speaker for the project. The cabinet needs to be the foot print of a clock radio (smaller then 10" by 6" preferred) and it only needs to play radio freq range (100-120hz to 15khz or so) and is only going to be 3ft away from the listener.

Any recommendations? I was thinking of a tangband or fostex. These seem to fit the bill but all the cab designs are huge and are designed to play down to 60hz.

How about some of the OB speakers gainphile has built? You could also go cheap with a Tangband full-range or expensive with the Jordan JX92S. You might want to ask your speaker questions in the appropriate speaker forums on this site. You'll have a higher chance of getting useful answers.

For the amp, you should be able to get 4-5 W out of a 6LU8 (or probably 6T9) spud in UL mode. I'll be posting the final design soon. You can get a primer here: 6LU8 Spud RFC. You could also look at the Tubelab SimpleSE.

The simple se is in the works. However it will be over $300 and be 20lbs. Im looking for something very small to put on a desk at work that will replace my beloved clock radio (old tube radio that got dropped and shattered into a million pieces).

Well since the big guy replied. If i was to make a uFonken, do i just buy a fostex of the right size from madisound and call it good, or is there a small baffle step cross over i dont know about?

You need the FF85k, either from Madisound, or all tarted up from me.

You might find that 1 w & these are a bit limiting unless you are using them nearfiled.

Any of the other more efficient 3" Fostex need a box about 2x as big to get the same bass, and at that point, one can get FE103 (or better yet) FE127e into that small a box for a lot more bottom end and even more efficiency.

Planet10, I never had time to thank you, but that speakers are really amazing.

I am glad you like them. They are really surprising. The looks on people's faces when i fire them up in my big room is very satisfying 🙂
