1 day ghetto line array build < £200

Bumping my own thread to say these speakers have been in use for a year or so now and they are holding up well.

Treble and midrange very clear. Bass is tight and accurate.

I’ve played everything I could think of on them. No unpleasant surprises.

If I want to impress, I play a female vocalist to demonstrate the clarity and large scale image and Toccata and Fugue in D minor to fill the room with awesomeness.

I moved these to another room a little while ago to try with my tube amp and they were damaged in the process: the hot glue separated and a few of the cones popped off the back of the line array drivers.

I discovered the double sided tape holding the upper cones inside the top woofer buckets had also separated (dumping a little bit of the kiln dried sand into the bucket but most was still in the cone).

I thought I’d try silicone instead of hot glue to repair the line array this time (my fix looks messy because access was difficult as I didn’t bother to disassemble it; a new build could be done neatly) and when I reattached the inner cones with new double sided tape I added pop rivets to try to stop it separating again.

The elastic in the bungees had stretched to the point the line arrays were resting on the buckets so I replaced the bungees with cable ties. I think stainless steel springs would look good here but I’m not going to bother.

I’m still enjoying listening to this system when I get the chance.

The crossover (and maybe bi amping) is essential for getting good sound from these, there wasn’t any way to make them work well with the tube amp without a crossover.

Enjoy!
