PRV 5MR450NDY is really a nice midrange. Covers that whole range well. It’s what I use on XSD for good reason (470Hz to 4k7) but can go up to 10k easily. Low distortion and very sensitive.
Dayton PA130-8 is inexpensive but also very nice.
Tang Band W5-2143 will cover this range very nicely as well.

Ideally sqrt(350*3500) = ~1107 Hz mean
~13543.8/pi/1107 = 3.9" eff. dia. = 4.5 - 5" frame
Closest drivers to the ones I preferred would be AlNiCo or neo Fostex or similar, though the 4" FE108EZ I do have experience with makes a fine ~inexpensive replacement with just a Lowther $0.97 tweak and make the baffle big enough to support the low end.

You didn't set any minimum power rating, just SQ...............i'm not sure i'd trust .28mm of xmax with a driver open baffle to 350hz
Maybe as low as 700 Hz depending on baffle and max Spl.What you're suggesting is a 4 way then.....and kinda where Linkwitz landed with the 521 and an 8" midwoofer to 1khz and then handed off. I gotta say if i were to go that route, i'm not crossing anywhere between 1-3k.
So yeah: 2 drivers, particularly if you want to go higher than 2kHz which is best with a smaller diameter mid..
Might listen to Plott’s implementation here:

He is currently high-passing the planar tweet at 5kHz, so that full-range 8” from Tangband is covering most of the mid.s and treble - and that’s basically what you are asking for.
That’s true…..it’s not unlike me to enjoy 105db peaks from time to time. You didn't set any minimum power rating, just SQ...............
Me too and higher, though in my time there weren't any high power mids cones < 8", so for SQ it was horns.
Interesting, how best to support the nude driver, tiny baffle or suspended somehow? I just bought material for a 35-40L cab (for MW19TX-8) but space and moveability are really important in my situation. I tried the TX in my albeit small 17L TLonken and no 50hz (60 even 40 were good); adding 50hz resonance sounded... resonant. I wouldn't want to build a cab and still needed a woofer or sub. But totally portable OB would be worth considering. (Then what's best continuing on down to 40hz?)The best drivers for very wide band operation are not cheap:
Satori MW19TX
...
The Satori is slightly larger and I have been able to use it down as low as 200Hz when crossed over steeply (I use DSP) and up to 2kHz. All three can definitely work down to 350Hz when nude without a problem.
Greg please remind me what is the 97-cent tweak? (No archive.org access.) I thought the 108e∑ translucent floral cone looked too fragile for OB, but 350hz high-pass takes away the risk?Ideally sqrt(350*3500) = ~1107 Hz mean

Why not choose 250-300hz ?Looking for sublime midrange detail through the entire passband where almost all of the fundamentals lie...what's your goto?
The goal is to decrease the passband of the midrange driver and keep it a 3way. Sure, we could do a midbass driver but that certainly adds to the cost and complexity of the design.
So i've ordered a B&C 8PE-21 for baffle testing polars and see what comes back. Response is really smooth right out to 5k and they're very musical sounding not to mention crazy efficient. Basket isn't as open as i'd like but the polars will tell the story there.......i really doub't any rearward reflections will have an impact to the fwd response beyond a half db here or there.
Aurum Cantus 2560 planar is now looking like the likely tweeter option if the B&C proves to be all it can

I have built a series of speakers where the midrange and tweeter are hung by wires within a welded-wire cage that stands on the floor. The woofers are located near the floor and not connected to the rest to prevent vibration transmission. In earlier designs I also hung the woofer inside the wire-mesh cage, but now I tend to use small baffles and multiple smaller drivers for the woofer section. See the attached picture for two examples. I find this design approach produces near constant directivity for these drivers and because there are no panels or box there are no internal or panel resonances to color the sound, etc.

Thanks! I was thinking to do X’s SLOB bass section……it would be nice to do a nude midwoofer and tweeter above
@CharlieLaub Interesting info about the 15" Deltalite. It might be actually a good match for the Grand Heil.
I did an analysis of that in my audioXpress paper that came out last October, with numbers given for the Deltalite 2515. The aX editor moved the analysis out of the main article and into the Online Supplementary Material that you can access without a subscription. Here is how to get it:

It is one of those things that seems counterintuitive, but they just won't exhibit any issues. 🙂My brain can't accept that these wouldn't suffer from Doppler with the inertia while playing.
I've been hanging open-baffle speakers (in various forms) from my listening room ceiling for decades.
