ROAR12 Suitable drivers

I’d think very seriously about building a Roar 12. I built one and while it was painfully loud at 80-100hz, the low end extension just want there. If you simulate one using the Paraflex model in Hornsresp, you’ll see it’s not as good a performer as when simulated as a tapped horn.

I did a lot of surgery on mine, changed drivers, looked for any possible mistake I could have made. In the end, I reached the conclusion that the low frequency resonator just isn’t as efficient as the models predict. The high frequency resonator is.

The box got burnt, and I built some MTB manifolds of my own design. A much, much easier build and offered about 6db more at 50hz than the Roar did.

Despite the above, I have considered building another one. As the bottom end of a bass guitar rig, it was insanely punchy. A really impressive sound for that application.

I wonder if an upstream helmholtz resonator would improve this instead of a damped qw resonator for the ‘front’ section of the roar types?

the lackluster bottom end performance of roar and paraflex had me perplexed as well. I just assumed it was complicated by the low Qes high motorforce drivers required in those designs with massive cone control to ‘fight’ against ?

those types of drivers already have rising rate responses, and then if the enclosure has another resonator very hot up top or at the others second pipe resonace (paraflex) then it’s even ‘worse ’ I guess?
