Just upgraded my pc from 8700k to 12400, probably a 20-20% improvement in speed.
So powered up the pc and lots of noise in the video on screen.
It just kept telling me windows had a problem and had to restart, which it did indefinitely.
So got my flash drive out with Win 11 on it and installed it.
Then went through Microsoft interrogation before I could get to the Windows start page.
Then put vivaldi (email, browser) back on but couldnt for the life of me find where the email client was.
Then tried to install iphoto express (a picture editting program which worked previously.
Its a 32 bit program and now wont install.
And not finished yet.....

Yesterday, I spent about half an hour trying to get HEVC/HEIC working on Windows, finally having to install a third party codec because M$ wants 1.29$ for it now! Meanwhile in Manjaro, everything just works.
I got a new network card that's 10 gigabit. Linux just worked flawlessly, but Windows? I had to tether my cell phone by USB to give it internet to download the drivers (because I don't have an optical drive and the drivers came on a CD)!
It's a lot better than it used to be, but Windows is still a turd IMHO.
I considered upgrading from an R9 3900X to R9 5900X, but I can't pay almost 600$ for an unnecessary 20% speed boost.

I just rotated 4 PCs over the last few days and had nary an issue. It's always about what's familiar. I can't handle MacOS, Can barely handle the iPad, and I'm extremely illiterate at Linux.
Then again, I don't use an email client any more. Windows setup is painful, so it's better to get a pre-built with Windows on it already if you find it a bit winding (I do, but I manage).

Windows installation is basically "Next, next, next, I don't have a code, next, next, next" LOL
Most Linux installs are even simpler - Installed in 10 minutes and no rebooting several times, no drivers to provide etc.
With manjaro GNOME, the only thing I had to "fix" was to install "system-config-printer" so printing would work 🙂

12400 sure has nice specs - what cpu cooler are you using and what temperatures does it ht with heavy loads? (I use a single E5-2680V2 with DDR3- runs very cool in a Rosewill Prism case)
Who really needs a Bugatti Veyron when the speed limit is 70? I'm six generations down from the latest in both phone and PC - everything seems to work just fine as a daily drive. In other words, havent found an application yet those machines cant run quite reasonably. Guess I'm just less-than the enthusiast Intel, AMD and Apple would like me to be.
One of my favorite things about compueters is when they copy the %&* attribute in a cut / paste when I never want that. Thanks, Mr programmer / committee!

I use Linux, but like all other operating systems, it has its problems, and unlike the world of Windows, if you cannot use a piece of hardware, rest assured you will not succeed. My experience using Linux prevents me from saying Linux is better than other operating systems. That depends on what one expects from an operating system.
My experience says Linux is better in every way save for the rare software that doesn't run a native Linux version but there's Wine or Virtualbox for that.
As far as computer speed? My laptop is a gen3 i3, and it's glacial. My phone is three times the speed. I don't want to wait 3 hours to install updates or compile code that takes 90 seconds on my desktop but I don't NEED the laptop so why upgrade? One fast machine is enough. I don't need a Veyron, but I don't want a Prius...

What do you use? Just interested. No ya don't, I won't touch that garbage.

It revs up and down a bit with workload.
It couldnt afford the 12900K so went for the 12400 which isnt a million miles behind it.
Paid about £300 for cpu, cooler and motherboard.
Will probably get a couple of hundred for the old on ebay so upgrading hasnt cost much.
It's all garbage, just different kind of garbage. No ya don't, I won't touch that garbage.
What the Heck are you talking about, Nigel? Unless it is hardware problem.
I am a Computer Expert. 8700kHz? Computers are up to about 3Ghz these days!
My advice to you is to download the World's Friendliest and Free Operating system (having made written notes of your passwords) and burn it to DVD-R:
https://ubuntu.com/
Linux is Good People. Not like The Others. 😛

He's talking about the MODEL number of the CPU dude... LOL Some computer expert 🙄
Also Manjaro > Ubuntu by far. After running Ubuntu for 8 years, I ditched it and wish I'd switched much sooner. Even now, my sound card doesn't work in Ubuntu out of the box, but it does in Manjaro.

And WHAT model is this? There are many. With many incompatabilities?

upgrade to windows 7. It runs without any problems
They are Intel cpu model names not GHz !
8700K is 8th gen over clockable.
The 12400F is none over clockable but is fast enough for my needs.
