Celestion 2-way PA speakers or Frugel Horns XL for metal/hard rock?

I am thinking of building some speakers to place next to my tv.

I listen to metal and hard rock, also a lot of live concerts from blu-rays.

I have an ACA camp amp (class a, 8wpc) hooked up directly to my media pc.

The options i am considering are:

Or

I don't really listen at super loud levels maybe 85db max give or take.

Which one would be a better fit do you think? Any other designs I should consider?

What's your budget, and available space?

IMO, the Celestion speaker lacks LF extension and could use help from subwoofers.
Also IMO, full-range drivers are rarely much good at rock music. They're often ragged in the kHz range, and it's usually pretty easy to push them to a point where harmonic distortion is obvious.

If I had to pick one of those two speakers, it'd be the Celestion. I'd re-work the cabinet into a floorstanding design, perhaps an ML-TL, for more LF extension. Aim for 40Hz.

Neither.

Two VERY different loudspeakers. If you added woofers to FHXL it might well play loud enuff, but if you are going that route FHXL is likely not the best satellite.

I fully expect the FHXL to have better sonics than thr Celestion, which is designed to play loud as its primary purpose.

Thank you both for the input. You have kinda confirmed my thinking as well.

I'd say budget would be in the 500-700 GBP range. I live in an apartment so medium to small amount of space, i.e. 3.3m wall to wall from the tv to the sofa.

These are the types of things i listen to:

Loudness is not my primary concern tbh, i'd rather sacrifice some loudness /bass for sonics.

Any ideas what else i could look at?

I also thought about a FHXL + subwoofer combo, is that a good idea?

I’m not a metal head but I am Big fan of Babymetal so will have to have a listen to these others.

If you do plan to use a subwoofer, perhaps that Celestion 2-way - or something in the same vein - isn't such a bad idea? I've heard good things about that specific compression driver, though I'd go for a better, smoother constant-directivity waveguide. The TF1225 is probably decent enough, I very much liked the TF1020 myself. There are many worked-out designs out there, such as the Econowave that should fit the bill.

These mid-sized pro woofers are fairly efficient with a somewhat high Fs and can be used in enclosures of modest size, usually tuned in the 60-80Hz range. While this will not make for much low bass, the excursion minima is right where lots of energy is present in rock/metal. A bonus is that if you do want to play it loud once in a while, you will be able to, stupid loud even! The trick is finding such a woofer with good sonics. Your subwoofer will make up for the missing low-end. Note that a fullrange + sub could also do well and have a similar advantage if tuned in the same area (and ideally high-passed), minus the "stupid loud" option.

Not necessary for a medium/small space IMHO. Just build a A10.3 Pensil.

it certainly looks like a great option, pensil 11s look good too

I can recommend FaitalPro 3FE22, being metalhead myself and enjoying it in different boxes. Two single (or dual) sealed boxes either with a single subwoofer or two helper woofers, ideally actively crossed over will be great.
looks good, thanks for the reccomendation. active crossover you say? hmm interesting

something like this embla thing would be what I would look into, paper cone woofer, simple crossover

i've built something similar before, the cygnet mkii both with 1st order xover and a more aggressive 3rd over. i didn't like them tbh they sounded muddy to me

That i smuch like the diy projects based on the Dyna A25.

Before I listened to BM i used to think they are crap. How wrong i was... I love them I have almost all of their Blue rays (except the ridiculously priced ones on ebay)

You should definately listen to Unluckly Morpheus, Band-Maid, and Nemophila. Japanese metal bands, they are absolutely amazing.

indeed. i am torn between these options, i.e.. FHXL or Pensils or Celestion 2-way (+subwoofer later if i feel l need it). Gravitating towards the Celestion if i'm honest since i listen live stuff more

this is very interesting indeed, and the cost is very low. i am thinking of using this driver to build some speakers for my pc.
what enclosure volume did you go for? hell i might go for dual drivers per channel.
also do you use a miniDSP ?
