[Solved] Audio Research CD2 tray opening issues
I have a Audio Research CD2 player which has a tray opening issue.
Probably just needs some cleaning but I am unsure how, and hoping people could give some pointers.
The issue is that when I press the eject button it might open half way, pause for a second and close again.
Sometimes it will open all the way and close immediately again.
This can happen several times and then it will open and stay open for me to lay in the CD.
Closing is usually OK but can experience funkiness too sometimes.
CD's, when inserted, play just fine. So I am assuming there is some detection thing that needs cleaning, but I don't know where it might be located.
Of course I tried looking it up, but all you get then is using a CD cleaner.
And since the laser doesn't seem to be dirty I doubt (but could be wrong) that is the issue.
Anyway, hoping to be able to use the player again since it's a very nice transport using AES/EBU. Never used the analogue outputs since, till the end of the month, I own a Devialet 400 setup. Switching to a Luxman L-590AX MKII then so would need a new DAC too.
Thanks in advance.

AFAIK Audio Research used Philips back then, but either way I will replace the belt.
I can see it sitting in the front when the tray is open but of course can't replace it from there.
Thanks.

Thought I had replied to this with an update, guess not.
I did replace the belt back in November of 2020, but nothing changed.
The tray will still get out partially and close, or completely out and close in one go.
It still feels to me like a sensor, of sorts, if that is possible,
When I had it apart to replace the belt I also checked the gears, and they feel fine to me when manually pushing the tray out.
I hope anyone else has an idea what to do.
I don't mind replacing something, I'm just not sure what.
Of course, I could look for an transport replacement (it's a Philips CDM12.1 iirc).

it is a Phillips mech, they came out of the 920, 921 and 925 phillips cd players. I have a spare mech if someone needs one
Sounds to me likely a faulty tray open or close switch - post some photos of the mech, someone can probably advise where they are.
I didn't know there was a switch. Can't say I noticed one when I had it apart too.
I'll post some pictures today.

Found the switch. No idea why it didn't hit me before since it's fairly loud.

Anyway, when taking it apart from the transport and using my multi-meter to beep its connections, I notice the contacts make a bad connection.
Could barely get a beep out of it.

So I definitely need to find a replacement for that. Anyone know the exact name for it? 🙂
Also, when pulling the transport apart I noticed the center thingy that goes into the CD hole and pushes it up against a ceiling ring (really now idea what they are called) has cracked on top. It's like the chrome/plastic part.
So that needs a replacement too.

Feels like I will need to look for a entire replacement for that part?
Also made a picture of the exact CDM model. CDM 12.4/05

Problem solved. Dad to the rescue 🙂
Turns out the problem were the contacts having baked dust on them, or corrosion.
Something like that.
Fix was to use some 12000 grid sandpaper and rough it up a tiny bit so it properly makes contact again.
Tray opens and closes fine again 🙂
Thanks for all the suggestions here too.

That cracked bit is just a thin foil cover over the spindle top, pull the bits off with fine tweezers, and check for any remnants in the chassis, they're conductive so you don't want them finding a home where they can let the magic smoke out.
Find a micro switch, the contacts are enclosed, measure this one.
Cost about 15p UK here.
Or find another in some place, pretty common in printers too.

No need for that anymore, but I did try and finding one was very hard.
Meaning one with the correct length, width and height.

A new DVD-R unit is about USD 15 - 20 here, some variation is there due to make (LG, HP) and IDE/SATA interface.

Sorry, but what does that have to do with my issue that is resolved?
Sometimes the assembly is a lot cheaper than parts.
Connectors, Microswitches, Electronic Connectors, PCB Connectors, Miniature &
Sub-miniature microswitches, Micro Control Switches Manufacturer from India
They make tiny switches among other things, you may store the link...lots of drawings there.
