after some listening and comparing bass reflex speakers (the one with the hole) and fully closed i must say that the bass at bass reflex is really rubbish.
the bass goes at 1 and only frequency loud and you do not hear any other bass frequencies because they are not audible. it is really boring to listen to.
what is your experience? do you like bass reflex? or is it a common knowledge that it sucks?

Moderators Note: The title of this thread was changed around the time of post #36, from "bass reflex sucks", as it didn't convey the topic well enough according to e3k.

Exactly right. Those who like bass reflex designs may never have heard live acoustical bass,
which sounds quite different from most speakers, and especially from most reflex designs.

Have you compared both equalized for the same response? sealed might sound better in home without equalization though.
This is a good description of a reflex speaker that is mismatched to its amplifier, or incorrectly designed. Both are widespread, so it's not surprising that listening to a variety will result in this conclusion, but done right they can be pretty good....

anyway i did put now a piece of cloth into the holes and now it plays better. i know it was not designed for that but in my opinion those speakers are just loud at bass and not precise.
Acoustic bass sounds even better with OB speakers 🙂Exactly right. Those who like bass reflex designs may never have heard live acoustical bass,

Small reflex speakers are just trying to cheat the laws of physics.
You need something approaching the size of a double bass in order to reproduce it properly - a 15" driver on a large OB perhaps?

Maybe a little context would be helpful. What speakers are you talking about. Otherwise your thread is just a rant.

If you are listening to one note bass you are listening to the wrong bass reflex speakers.
The wrong sealed woofers can also be booming one note creatures.
Thanks DT

you sure never heard well executed open baffle bass
see linkwitz (rip) site for open baffle bass

absolutely true, small closed box acts like air spring, restricting the membrane movement resulting in compressed sound
may sound little better than bad bassreflex, but not by much
Is that the diameter or the length? 😉just a 1 inch tube in the box.
?
I find a 30hz tuning is amazing in woofers and subs.
Above, yea, well, not my preference.
For a 2 way, a lot of garbage (upper Midrange and stuff) usually leak out the port.

Also some technical pros and cons. Vented designs more prone to time issues (group delay, phase, etc.). Sure vented/bass reflex can be well done, but harder and more prone to make a poor compromise. Decades ago when amps were precious, yes it made sense to cheat the laws of physics as much as possible 🙂 but at what acoustic cost? Nowadays, watts are cheap and you can easily reduce your speakers to a molten slag heap atop wood ashes if you choose, almost. I'm not a golden ears, but I would choose sealed over vented.
Take the reflex and make a MLTL with it using the AMLTL technique. It will help to get rid of that one note bass and really open up the midrange clarity.
