I can't imagine ripping my 7,000 cd library; It took me forever to just sharpie the edges.
Who exactly will listen to them then?Correct me if I am wrong, but your CDs (and vinyl records) will be the only storage method not affected by an EMP provided by the detonation of a nuclear weapon by some world nutcase.
Highly evolved cockroaches?Who exactly will listen to them then?
On what equipment? That EMP was pretty rough. When looking from the positive side: all streaming companies will be silent too.Highly evolved cockroaches?
They're highly evolved, they made their own from scraps and are going to be playing @mordikai collection that are all so nicely Sharpie edged...On what equipment?
I ripped my small collection of about 300 CDs, uncompressed to a media server with SSDs. Takes only about 200 GB of space. Keeping the discs so far.
Playback via VLC player on an Apple TV into a DAC / system.
They're so much easier to access, I find I'm listening much more than before, and re-discovering why I bought them in the first place.
Starting to collect again too. Can't imagine going back to playing physical discs.

All forms of playback are legit and offer interesting differences in the experience. They're so much easier to access, I find I'm listening much more than before, and re-discovering why I bought them in the first place.
Tubed equipment.On what equipment?
Powered by a diesel generator.

Did you at least use a green Sharpie? 🤣I can't imagine ripping my 7,000 cd library; It took me forever to just sharpie the edges.

There are myriad reasons to rip even if you stream. Every device and format I listen to in significantly different ways. Playlist, new artist, single songs, whole albums, greatest hits, genre specific ect etc. I also like to pay the artist, directly if I can. I reached out to a newly discovered musician recently on Bandcamp; I inquired about an entire catalog purchase for a discount, he and I were stoked with the deal, (he with more money than he has ever made in a week on Bandcamp and me with a new music rabbit hole for 50% off!) and it has turned in to a pretty good friendship with great conversations about what were listening to and recommendation for new artist to check out. There is no wrong way to listen to music, making sense is hardly the point.Late to the party, but ripping CDs that you normally listen to over the streamer seems useless. Maybe special editions, but nowadays it is hard to find a special edition that is not available for streaming. 25 million titles on tap versus a bunch of CDs? The case seems open and shut.

I would miss the inconvenience of putting a CD in the player 😀
...keeps the brain active after all!

However I do have far too many CDs...many of which I will never play again.
Maybe I should put them in a couple of travel boxes and send them to someone!

Recap: Keep them, stored in as less volume possible.I have around 1000 CDs collected over many years but find myself increasingly using streaming (Spotify and Apple) along with my vinyls. I am moving house, and SWMBO has intimated that they all need to go. What do you think? Keep 'em or ditch 'em?
My experience, in the late 80’s I sold all my 500 records because there where CD’s. In the 00’s in started ripping CD’s en sold my CD’s en starting buying records again. Now using on and offline streaming. But keep the records and have recrets of selling the CD’s also because I have such a nice CD player.
Are you serious?!? WTF! oh no!!!Did you at least use a green Sharpie?

I gave away 2000+ Los to a music lover in the early 2000s. Perhaps I regret it, but in my heart I do not. Space, weight and I could not abide surface noise.

In 2023, I re-converted my collection to 24-bit / 96 kHz FLAC. I still had MP3s holding back from the previous conversion effort.
All of them are now back in storage. Why do I keep them? Not sure. I don’t anticipate I’ll ever need more than 24-bit / 96 kHz FLAC.
That being said, I would not have been able to move away from MP3 had I not kept them.
