Half Chang Pioneer BOFU replacement drivers

I have a set of Half Chang that need replacement drivers.
The original foam surrounds on the Pioneer BOFU are letting go.
Is there a replacement foam surround for the Pioneer?

Or.... Should I replace the drivers.
visiton B20, SB20FRPC30-8 or the GRS BOFU are within my budget for these boxes.

I've had the Changs for about 10yrs (guessing) I think they are great! (*)
For Me, to get my feet wet in single driver audio, the BOFU drivers and the Half Chang are perfect and were cheap. At that time I wish I had bought the Fostex, but they were and still too expensive. It's ok, I was surprised by the Changs.

I've always wanted to try to remove the dustcap, install phase plugs. I've already done the basket mods. Ductseal on the stamped frame to reduce basket ringing and a wool hat for the magnet. Also added the Dayton Tweeter and cap.
Another goal was to try to calculate for baffle step and whip up a "crossover"? or compensation circuit.

*Now I'm using Equalizer APO and along with the dustcap-ectomy, I hope to get rid of that slight honky sound that always bug me a bit. For the type of music, I listen to (Classical), they work out fine. But on intimate vocals, it pops out a bit.

With the Pioneer's not having a correct replacement surround available I figured I'd have to shim the VC so the dust cap was going to be removed anyways, I made up some phase plugs.

Looking great! Can’t wait to hear how they sound after the new surrounds !!!
I Hope they work with the new surrounds not being specifically made for the Pioneer. Will see in about a few days as they are supposed to arrive by the 29th.

Had a question about baffle step, If I'm using Equalizer APO or any other type of filter. Can I apply baffle step using EQ APO or DSP type of filters?
Looking at a few posts here and elsewhere, it seems BS is a gentle roll off of the highs, maybe a slight notch at the "step" frequency.

On the back wall of your speakers have you tried damping, etc- to help kill the back wave?

Yes,
I have placed some "damping" material on the sides, back and top and bottom of the cabinet.
Also have added Pollyfill like material to the upper half of the box (not blocking the port) to help with the reflections behind the woofer. I damp driver basket with putty for ductwork and added a boot over the magnet.

LOL I spent days listening, adding removing "fill" before gluing the side on. Come to find out, I like a "livelier" sound (less damping) as too much damping material can make the speakers sound dull, lifeless to Me.

The Surrounds came in yesterday.
I was so happy, they fit fine, no rubbing VC, no issues at all. Thankyou Mr. looneytunes for helping me find a suitable replacement.

I do like the sound of these speakers better (I think) after removing the dust caps. I also installed the phase plugs I made. Whether or not these tweaks are making an audible difference to my old ears, IDK but, it finishes the look.

They were always bit bass heavy for my small room so, Equalizer APO to knock of some room gain.
I'm enjoying the Half Changs again 🙂

I think I've seen this one being discussed somewhere, it it was quite some time ago ans now I don't remember where, but vaguely I remember that someone commented that "sonically, it's not on par with the original Pioneer".
Since it's cheap, someone could take a bite, and it if it's not as half-bad, could make a nice replacement 🙂

The GRS 8" would have been my last resort if the surrounds for the Pioneer didn't fit or, if I somehow screwed up the dust cap removal.

I was looking at using GRS 18" in an open baffle, that 18 was super cheap! and possibly the only way I'd get to experience OB.
