i was still getting static and a little fade out and i noticed when i tapped on the relay it would go away. Changed the 30 year old relat for a new one, BIG difference
Does solder manufacturer make a difference? Ive noticed this solder im using doesnt flow and adhere as well as the other I had been using, Kester. I ought some cheap chinese stuff and im really not liking it
Next post you will be writing that your soldering iron is not heating up? 🙄

Ok, Im a novice and in over my head with you guys helping me. I have very little electronics training and schooling. I am a retired IT manager not a electronics tech. When I first took up this hobby I had no equipment or a workstation and had to start from scratch. My first soldering iron was a kit I bought from Amazon for a few dollars. I did a lot of reading and inquiring about what was needed to do this as a hobby.
The first thing I was told was to buy a good soldering station so I bought a Hako soldering station, desoldering gun and a very good Dmm, Fluke.
I got into this because when I was in the military station in Japan I acquired a lot of HiFi gear and over the past 40 years it just deteriorated needing repair.
I knew very little but wanted to learn and so I got an account at Audiokarma and this site. I am willing to take advice and learn as I go with all this being said I get that the folks I work with to get these amps operational get frustrated and aggravated with me. I do appreciate all the help and take notes as I go thru this process of learning. Ill never be an expert but at least I know what to look for in a lot of these situations.
As far as solder joints being bad most were originals but admittingly some were mine thus the question about solder wire. When I solder , I remove the old solder, clean the site with 90% iso alcohol and use flux. If this isd not the correct way I would be more than happy to take the critisisim.
By the way thanks for all the help and I did remeasure the caps I believe C705 and C708 to make sure after the transistors was resoldered and I also measured the resistors and they had the correct voltage .

I wouldnt say it was any single problem. Initally my J49 mosfets were blown from an internal failure. I completely rebuilt the power supply with the help from a friend on Audiokarma. That with replacing the mosfets with exicons still wouldnt bring it out of protection. I rebuilt the protection and regulator board and it still wouldnt come out of protection. With the excellent help of Molly and Madis64 I was able to track down a lot of bad/old solder joints with the wires connected to the regulator board and the main boards. I also found some bad solder joints on a couple of transistors I had replaced. I also replaced the relay.
The wires in this thing are real brittle from age along with the solder joints. I actually replaced 2 of the wires because of their deteroration. I think it was a few issues and not really one thing.
Every amp I get help on I learn something which helps me on tne next. My alpha II is next up after I recap an amp for my son. He picked up a nice Sony TA-F444es for $100 and it works fine, just the sound is dull and not very good so recapping should help that

(1) So what did the power outage / storm do? What was the root damage? The regulators?
(2) Loose connections can cause grief. Did you do exacerbate the problem when you took it apart for repairs?
(3) I hope your father in law is better.
(4) Winter is coming, hopefully your son is warm at night.

You should find the cause of this problem, otherwise you will just be introducing random failures into the gear you are working on which will be most difficult to track. 😉
When I was new to this hobby I used to shotgun problems and just replace a bunch of components. I found out real quick that is not the way to go. Now I try to find the issue. Even during a recapp if I hit an issue I'll stop with the recap and find the problem.

Soldering iron and solder are your friends, you do not need to clean the pads after removing old solder with wick, flux should do the job...
