Yep. You do need to take care if you intend to go far.

Most of Australia is desert and distances between towns in the outback, particularly in Western Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory, can be huge.
During COVID lock down, friends of ours were staying in Noosa and had to drive home via the Northern Territory and South Australia as they weren't allowed to cross the Qld/NSW border or the NSW/Victoria border. The trip took many thousands of miles and many days, as each border crossing required a week quarantine and tests!
Brains, patience and good preparation for a journey are vital, as are good playlists for the car stereo!

Wavecor, too. Frd & Zma files for their drivers after burn in.Although I've never heard SB drivers,
SB Acoustics must surly be doing something right to gain all the praise they get in so many threads 🙂
PRV 4MR60-4 is an inexpensive and fairly sensitive woven fiberglass 4" that sounds great up to 4k. Bass to 100 Hz in 2 ltrs sealed is average.
Dayton SD line of DVC woofers has been great and cheap for a LONG time now. I've used the 215 and 270, and PaulC used the 315 in the Pit Vipers.
Dayton ND25F is a great inexpensive tweeter.
GRS Pioneer 4" replacement is a fantastic midrange.
GRS Pioneer BOFU replacement is a good wide range.

I have to mention the Peerless NE-W line which sadly is hard to find in small quantities. The NE180W, NE149W, NE123W and NE315W are phenomenal drivers at any price. The NE149W is a giant slayer. It does everything right from top to bottom. Amazing midrange too, especially considering it will take a good deal of power and not compress like other mids.

It's no Revelator, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it to the 1K I used here. Pair it with something like the Beast Mode tweeter in a 6 or 8 inch waveguide and it would make a cool, cheap large 2-way.

Attached are in-box measurement of the woofer. One is distortion the other is gated. As I said, I wouldn't be afraid to use it all the way to 1K. It might even do well as an old school 2-way using the top end roll off as the crossover.
Sorry for potato quality pictures but its all I have (I think).

"I am glad I tested all the woofers I had as it resulted in one making the cut that I didn't even consider initially, the GRS 8SW-4. The 8SW-4 has smooth frequency response up past 2 kHz which was totally unexpected since it is labeled as a subwoofer. Funny how it's actually better suited for 2-way designs and has a smoother frequency response then any of GRS's other 8" woofers."

Ya'll got me curious; I mostly used RadioShack and similar back when still pretty decent ('60s - '90s), so anyone go that far back and still active enough to compare to current inexpensive offerings?
In 1994, my father purchased an upgrade kit for my computer.
It included a Panasonic double-speed (300KB/sec) CD-ROM drive, a Creative Labs sound card that could play or record in stereo at 8 bits, 22KHz (maximum playable/recordable frequency ~11KHz) and included Microsoft Encarta, an encyclopedia on CDROM. I spent hours and hours reading that encyclopedia, full of interesting facts and tidbits. Besides, there was nothing else to do with the CD-ROM, apart from playing Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? Deluxe
It cost AU$695, which is about AU$1500 in today's money (US/€$1000), which must have a been a small fortune him, as sole income earner in our family.
Today we seem to have a problem spending over US$ XXX, perhaps because we are so used to buying commodity goods made by the Limited Liability Company, who offshored to the country with the Lowest Labor Costs eg. Indonesia < China. We don't want to buy anything made in our own Country, because we want to be in denial about it's true cost. Meanwhile it's being made by robots (mechanical or organic).
I'm guilty as the next person...

Peerless (Tymphany) makes great drivers, but they are very hard to find (except in big quantities) and not that cheap. If in that priceclass i could mention a while leap of drivers from Faital, Kartesian, SB acoustics, ... and even Seas or Scanspeak. But under 100€ it's less easy. The Mark Audio CHN110 costs 60€ and altough it's advertised and very good as fullrange driver, it's also an exellent midbass that can be tuned very low (i use it in an MLTL tuned to 30Hz). The Beyma 12BR70 i mentioned is 100€, and for that you got a 12" driver that also can be tuned to 30Hz and is usable toward 1.5Khz (with higher order crossover). I also used it already in a few projects (for clients) and it's great. I crossed it at 900Hz to a big compression driver in one setup and at 1200Hz in an other setup (both with dsp).
That is what i call cheap quality drivers, and the Beyma is made in Valencia, Spain i thought and The Mark Audio in Hong Kong.

Are Car Audio and or used drivers allowed in this discussion?I wanted to start a thread containing any bargain priced woofers, midbass and mid cone drivers.
Any newer driver currently available with a high performance to price ratio would be welcomed in this thread. Car audio drivers usually can be used for other purposes as well, so they're welcome too.

"Nokia bought an OEM speaker manufacturing unit from the larger corporation, ITT; This was back in the day. The ITT Corporation's subsidiary manufactured speaker components for decades. The Noika/ITT/OEM merger didn't last long as the OEM manufacturing operations were sold off to Harman Automotive.

The acoustic output of the Nokia 130mm/5.25" will blow your mind when its instructed by a signal where DSP is utilized. Digital signal processing simply redirects or creates a signal accounting for the shortcomings of the actual speaker and or the speakers environment; equalization DSP style." ...

We usually replace the small midbass in BMWs with the Peerless NE65W. Theyre significantly better than BMW OEM. The Volvo specific OEM mid domes are a good bargain. Sadly, they're unserviceable through Dynaudio. If you specifically design a system around them, you have to source another used one if it goes bad. Predictably, Dynaudio built them to a budget with cheaper materials, so they don't have much of anything in common with the venerable D76.
The Porsche OEM ITT 13cm midbass was made in collaboration with LPG, now owned by Paragon. Philips and Peerless also had their input with some of these drivers. You could find them in European TV sets as well, being that alot of older TVs had very good audio at the turn of the mid to late 80s when stereo TV broadcast was introduced. Some TVs actually had better amps and speakers than some smaller hifi setups. As kids we used to go around cannibalizing TVs left at the curb for the trash pickup, as people would typically scrap them once the picture tube went bad. Thats partially what got me into hifi and building speakers as a kid, using junk TVs and audio equipment for parts. Good times...

I drive a small BMW today, but i don't think that is needed, even with the standard setup like i have in my 1 series from 2022. I never had such a good clean in my car from a standard system in a car ...
Older BMW's are probally different. But i drove a 2002 M5 (of my girlfriend at that time) that also did have a great system (don't remember what it was). Only the 1997 Z3 I also drove quiet a few times (not mine) did not have a good sound system.

The US spec BMWs came with different audio setups depending on the specific model. I owned a few M3s and various 3 / 5 series from the late 90s onwards and wasn't that impressed with the OEM audio, especially in convertible models. I specifically remember the 2003 M3 with the horrible SMG, which I later converted to 6 speed manual. That car had lousy audio. Perhaps if you live in another part of the world, you may have gotten different audio components than the US models, being we Americans usually didn't pay as much attention to audio quality compared to European influenced countries.
A cautious word to GRS 8SW-4HE owners -
My son uses these in his laptop monitor system and just recently the subwoofer amp started to shut down once in a while, mainly after a few hrs during louder music playback. We traced it back to one of the VCs starting to rub inside the GRS 8 which is shorting out on the pole piece. It can be provoked by tipping the cone with both hands to one side.
The main issue I see with these woofers is the surround being too restrictive at higher excursions, pulling the cone over to one side while allowing the VC to contact the pole plate. They are a cheap driver with a stamped basket, so no big loss, but it can result in your amplifier becoming a casualty if it happens at higher volume levels.
