Peavey FH-1s

I just picked up a pair, also got the tops. Used to have the SP1 variant of these years ago.

I’ve seen some posts from people stating the Klipsch 33, 43 or the Emminence 15c is the way to go in these bins.

I’m using these in my workshop with the occasional yard parties with a pair of Dynaco Mark 3’s.

Does anyone have any experience with these and can recommend a driver for them as well as a complimenting horn driver(s) for a passive 2 or 3 way setup?

Tinkering, using a box I built as a test mule for the mids and highs. Klipsch k52h mid, Klipsch k100k tweeter with a Klipsch KLF20 Crites crossover, just to see what I have. I like it. This is with the original Peavey Black Widow 1504-4. Need a lower crossover point. Maybe A55g2 mids and a complimenting tweeter, or a 2 way with a Faital driver.

The FH-1’s upright in 3/4” birch, which will make each of them about 150 pounds loaded, which is also why they are on casters. I can roll them into place and block them up. universal crossovers from Crites are on the way.
Both of these were pretty rough - one had the laminate that was peeling up on the bottom. The coarse texture is also virtually impossible to clean. The texture can be knocked down with 80 grit. I’m at the point thanks to some Tightbond, clamping, wood filler, epoxy and lots of sanding where I got the laminate to seal and flatten as well as fix 46 years of road rash. I can paint the insides of the cabinets.
Still gathering parts.

Wow 150lb. Yesterday I almost bought near-new-looking constant-directivity double-horn SP-3 but chickened out due to size and 85lb... having just tweaked my back last Saturday. I might still get them, if I liked the Scorpion/22A/CH2/XO guts that I bought instead. There's a ton of them out there. My intent is to use Peavey as a widely-available (g)old-standard, to test my reflector-virtual-point-source idea on, as well as against. In fact I knew basically nothing about them until finding this @peteleoni thread

Nice thing about idlefish market (China's eBay) is videoclips. In an hour I could sample dozens of audio junk!

I wonder if an extra Scorpion or two could extend bass lower, at much-reduced sensitivity. I only need 40hz, home-use but "ultra-fi". Or one of the heavy-duty 15" pro-drivers like Fostex 15W300 which I have, or JBL 2226H or RCF 15L-554K which I've been eyeing.

If they’re old and built well.. or even not so well like Klipsch KLF’s .. they’re going to weigh close to or over 3 digits.

I built cabs for two Cerwin Vega 15’s with Klipsch parts. Just one of the original D9s weighed almost 100 pounds- each one of these has 2. They’re also 3/4” oak (built out of scraps from a historic landmark) lots of bracing and the horn drivers aren’t light by no means either.

Next project in the project: B&C DE10’s fitted to a pair of Klipsch Tractrix horns from a Klipsch 5.5. Some aluminum, keyhole saws and an old diaphragm as a template.

The horns have been cut down a quarter of and inch on each side to get them to 10 inches to match with the ZXPC 18x10 horns. These were a pair of horns that I bought on eBay, were cheap, but also pretty rough- worked for me given what I needed to do to them. Still need cleanup and paint.

Loving this thread and your Klipsch tinkering. I was looking for a pair of the Peavey FH-1 for a while.

Claude always said they were better than the LaScala bass horns over on the Klipsch forum. Couldn’t score any FH-1. You got two pair…lucky devil!

I did finally score some commercial LaScala bass horn separates this past year. I’m gonna have to go through a similar restoration as you’re doing.

My plan is to cut to the chase and just build a pair of the Reed Exodus 25Hz tapped horns for the bottom end that I will be able to use with anything I have that can play from 100Hz and up.
