Fun in a theatre - 3x Faital 18XL1800

"There is a reason... "the vast majority of speakers used in recording studios / mastering studios / post production movie sound tracks / Dolby / DTS / Auro 3D... Are not delayed resonance horns / transmission lines...
Horses for courses... Bloody loud but bloody terrible sound!"

A lot of those environments use monitors from the likes of Genelec, who use ported boxes for most of their products.

Ported boxes are a compromise between increased output, and time domain "problems" which are an order of magnitude smaller than those the room will add. High distortion and/or early limiting is obvious and problematic in every acoustic environment, so I can see why they've chosen to use ported boxes.

What I can't understand, however, is your bludgeoning insistance that sealed boxes are better than all other cabinets, when cost/output/distortion (ie, where sealed boxes tend to do fare poorly) are worthwhile considerations in any design.

Storm Audio sounds phenomenal but also costs way more than I want to spend on audio.

No I use the Denon AVC-A1H with 4 separate subs:
4x 15" on output 1 (will be replaced with 6x 18")
2x 21" on output 2
2x 21" on output 3
2x 18" on output 4
ART support is expected to be released in 2025.

I'll also start building new LCR speakers with 2x 15" woofers in each speaker. End goal is to get a very good, dynamic and clean sounding 7.4.6 system for both surround and music.
This will be an awesome cinema system, congratulations!
One question: Does your Denon AVC A1H have Auro 3D software?
If it does and you can place the "Voice of God" (VOD) rear top height speaker above your listening area, I have found the results to be stunning.... Noticeably more believable than any Dolby / DTS software processing when using an 11 .2 or 11.4 speaker set up.

Thanks!

Yes we use it every day as it's located in the living room.
Oooops - Should be VOG not VOD!
No problem, i understood 😁

I made a ceiling with 6 Atmos speakers and a cove in the middle with absorption panels so it's too late to install additional speakers. I'm actually really satisfied with the result.

If this: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/...s/genelec-8361a-review-powered-monitor.28039/

Counts as "Tesco value pack", then I'd be interested to see some measurements of what you consider high-end speakers.

Chris
Sorry to go off topic, but then again this is important and worth a mini rant... An interesting fact about Genelec and their "Low value packs" 😉

A few years after they started in 1985, Genelec started investing heavily in marketing, but they did not run many magazine adverts (no internet back then) instead they invested 12% of revenue (over 20% today) in a stroke of genius "vested interest" campaign.

They have donated $millions of worth speakers (this costs Genelec ZERO as the BOM is less than 10% of the retail "value" and the amount is 100% tax deductable) to the top educational / research and independent professional sound training facilities... So from teenage to any age, if you are studying sound almost anywhere of note, then Genelec dominate the studios by simply giving away their products and "sponsoring research".

This gets the entire industry used to "the Genelec sound" (for better or worse!) and creates strong brand loyalty and a subconscious belief that if the brand was used by school / collage / university / AES then it must be good... They actually admit to giving sales commission to the AES https://aes2.org/news/genelec-supports-aes-with-new-raw-the-ones-series-proceeds-pledge/
Calling bribes "supporting"... Genius!

Some recent examples of Genelec's market acquisition by stealth...
2019 https://www.genelec.com/-/university-of-surrey-guildford
2022 https://www.avinteractive.com/news/genelec-surrey-uni-16-07-2013/ Genelec marketing BS.
2024 https://www.genelec.com/-/press/gen...-collaborative-learning-at-tilburg-university
More 2024 https://sound.risd.edu/
They want to sell this stuff, even as a loss leader https://www.genelec.com/education so they give it away out the back door... Genius!

Many other "value pack" manufactures have now copied Genelec, but Genelec now have achieved "Critical Mass" ie The entire professional studio / recording / live sound and acoustic educational system has been brought up for the last 35 years believing Genelec's BS... So many engineers just automatically use Genelec because "everyone does"... Genelec really are the "Pied Piper" of audio... Genius!

Alex,
You haven't really addressed my post. If Genelec aren't good speakers, show us some measurements of something better than the one I linked.

Chris

For me I have found the most difficult compromise is finding floor area for the size / number of sub woofers I need to give me the bass I want.
To meet my personal SPL / distortion / 3D performance levels in home cinema I need 4 way ie subs below 60Hz / 80Hz plus three way active / tri amped above that for FL / FR and centre.
All the surround / effect channels can be small 10 litre cabinets.
I only use sealed box (or open baffle for the mid and top in a dedicated two channel rig) so all my mid and top speakers only require small / light easy to locate cabinets.

I'm sure these sound good, the 18XL1800 is a great driver! I would think 70L is a bit small for this driver, but I usually prefer oversized CB to keep the power demand at LF down, etc.
Hello sir. I am intersted in this theory.. I have um18s and sb rosso sw800 21 2of each.. um18s in 115L boxes and rosso 21s in 150L boxes and they both sound awful above 40hz and they need alot of power. I was thinking of putting them in 300L sealed boxes fully stuffed with light wool to kill the power handling and smooth out the bass.. What do you think? they both have a high Qtc .7 and strong BL
