Is the CHN 110 a viable option compared to the A10.2. Looking for the best mid, top end performance rather than bass output.
Chn 110 would be fine, but since iz likes big box maybe FH Joan. I made fhxl at first with Sota 11r (looks closer to Chn110 than other models) but than changed to 11ms and I like it more with Alpair. Is the CHN 110 a viable option compared to the A10.2. If the 10.3 is discontinued is the Alpair 11MS the replacement or are they different beasts, both fit the FHXL.
I snagged a pair of 10.3s a little while ago. they may still be available over home.
I think the 10p is suitable (per planet10) and more widely available.
Of course when/if a new driver is modeled that might be more attractive.

Another curveball suggestion: P7HDs in the MicroTower arrangement. Plenty of bass and P7HD top end.
Curveball maybe but interesting, shame there are not more sealed box plans for single drivers. Probably to big a ask in the bass department with a small driver.
You've answered your own [non] question there. 😉
Yes, the Alpair 10 series is discontinued. After 15+ years the jigs were at the end of their useful lives, and the original basket design, though still effective has been superseded by more recent types. Large parts of the 10.3 live on in CHR-90 though, in a similar way to how much of the old Alpair 7.3 continue in P7HD.

and bettered?superseded by more recent types
are these the MAOPs?
I was talking about the basket designs. The old one was good, but tended to get quite large for the necessary rigidity; the newer types tend to provide the same for a smaller size / greater ease of use.
I guess what I was trying to get at is what is the successor (or upgrade) to the Alpair 10.3 for builders to consider
or is the Alpair idea a dead end as a direction?

Yes, but it does bring the bass. Not as much DDR thru the midrange, not a whole lot thou, and a smoother top end.

You can see the current ranges, including the Alpair series units, on the MA website, with their relative dimensions etc., which is probably more useful / informational than anything I could write here though. At the end of the day, depends on how much you want to be spending, how large an enclosure you want, what your priorities etc. are.Large parts of the 10.3 live on in CHR-90 though, in a similar way to how much of the old Alpair 7.3 continue in P7HD.
Ok but components such as the basket etc are in service of larger design goals not as ends in and of themselves.the newer types tend to provide the same for a smaller size / greater ease of use
I guess a lot depends on which end of the telescope you're looking down.
Which is exactly why they aren't investing a large amount of money in replacing the moulds, jigs etc. for a basket that's inferior to more recent designs. Spending money in order to stand still rather than free up funds to produce successors, direct or otherwise, isn't great business practice. If you're willing to pay to have them replaced like-for-like and keep the driver in general production though, I'm sure they'll be glad to hear from you. 😉
I guess you're working on a new driver for Harley then? 🙂Which is exactly why they aren't investing a large amount of money in replacing the moulds, jigs etc. for a basket that's inferior to more recent designs.

What you see in the model numbers no longer gives an indication of where they stand in terms of sound quality. Since the Alpair 7/11ms came out and we have Alpair 7.3 demoted to Pluvia, and now it is confirmed that A10.3 demoted to CHR. The decendands probably work even better than where they come. The CHR/CHP 90 are certainly well liked. Smaller size likely improves mid/top.
And then there are the odd-balls, CHN-50/110. Dirt cheap stamped baskets, very good on merit, amazing for the price.
The newest one pushes the limits of FR MA cones. A decade ago Mark said he had to really push to get the metal cone A12 (A16.5 in the new numbering system i guess)

Pluvia 11
Alpair 11MS
Alpair 10.3
Alpair 10P
All these drivers are available, about the same price and work with FHXL. I've looked at the specs and the write up on each but what is the benefit or sound signature compared against each other. No point making 4 different units if they don't bring something different to the table.

See post #3.Alpair 11MS
Alpair 10.3
Alpair 10P
I thought the stock 11MS was almost as good as an Enab'l A10.3, but in a different enclosure. Haven't heard it in FHXL, but someone posted a build on youtube, so we know at least one person is enjoying this combo.
