Shouldn't the spoon be on the right side?
Mrs K is cooking potatoes separately, then (I) ground beets, cabbage, carrot that is softly fried in a saucepan and added to the potatoes together with some kind of meat. This time we had a can of porkmeat that worked fine. If required extra bouillon cubes are added (but mostly not), salt and pepper and eaten wit smetana (sour cream). It's mandatory to dilute the soup with alcohol and mrs K is "biting off" the vodka with 'salo' (dried or smoked pork belly) while I stick to my *knäckebröd".

While the northerners eat roots and drink vodka the Mediterraneans eat olives, fresh tomatoes, cheese and drink tempranillo and garnacha wines.
In the winter.
Cal- that thing you posted has a hole in the middle!

We are libreals .. leebrials ... sorry we are not conversatists .. raightwigne .. oh, never mind!Shouldn't the spoon be on the right side?
We have a 5-litre box of Garnacha, but honeste I usually go for Italian wines. Maybe Amaro is a bit to "beefy" (and expensive) so I often go for Nero d'Avola from Sicily.
Fork on the left, knife and spoon on the right.
Italian wines are too harsh for me... sounds like you hit that vodka a bit too much?
Box of wine.... seriously, that's a philistine thing to do. Even California liberals avoid wines in a box. ;-)
Sounds like you need more vodka.

All Swedish liquor stores are govt run and owned and much effort has been made to make Swedes drink less and focus on quality. Quality is guaranteed by experts visiting suppliers ju ensure that a $1000 wine is worth every cent as is a $10.
Some years back 10-15 we got those BiBs (Bag-in-Box) and as you see in my photo, there's the Crudo, white wine from Sicily that I normally buy bottled.
As a comparison, from Germany I've got 3-litre boxes of vodka (mainly used for liqueurs), rum (will last for ages and will eventually be used in liqueurs) and gin. The gin is actually produced at a very anonymous distillery here in our town.
Have passed 70, I try to keep alcohol consumption low to minimize health issues. One vodka shot for my soup is enuff and one maybe to glass off good wine is OK, but it was lightyears since I woke up with a dead opossum in my mouth ...

Yes, and there's cold butter in there.Cal- that thing you posted has a hole in the middle!
It appears to be aspic made in a bundt pan. Do you think the gray slimy stuff is raw oyster? If so it's appy time, dinner and dessert all in one.
Can you imagine making that just for a picture, knowing full well no one would ever eat it?
If you're not having guests over and don't need the pretentiousness, the spoon should be placed on the side of the hand that holds it. They are at home Mr. Wise Guy.Shouldn't the spoon be on the right side?
Where do we even start with this?Fork on the left, knife and spoon on the right.

Magnus, you did a fine job answering. I hope your wisdom is heeded. Tony is almost as old as you but sometimes that inner kid takes ahold.

Cal- Well, it would be a waste of olives and fruits for sure... and we love raw oysters... so, yeah, It's not in our nature to waste food.
SoundBrig- It seems to be a habit for Lutheran nations to control liquor... they did this in Washington State for eons until the peons rebelled... even so they still have a 100% tax on hard liquor. Everytime I drive up there I buy a case of bourbon for my brother in law. Our Costco price here is $240 for six 1.75 bottles of Bullitt. That includes our sales tax. The same thing in their Costco is around $450... As I recall, in Cal-Land (BC) they still have Gov. Controlled liquor stores?
Liquors and wine in boxes because the Gov. says so? No thanks....
Note... eons ago I worked with a Norwegian guy. He moved out and for a while lived in Copenhagen where liquor was (is?) cheap. His buddies would fly in on Friday night and got drunk the whole weekend until they flew back on Sunday afternoon.

By buying your booze in glass bottles.
And, hey, it's true.... the utensils are set in a particular way... do you know they have fish specific forks and knives too? And then you got the dessert spoon which goes above the dinner plate and faces left.
Then you got the Japanese dinner setting. The chopsticks on the right, the rice bowl, ALWAYS on the left. Did you know that if the Japanese make a presentation with the rice on the main dish -no bowl- there's also a way -and place- to set the rice?
Did you also know that in Chinese feasts the fried carp comes last?
I won't even start you on how to present a formal Japanese lacquer bento box.
Yes, that last picture made that quite obvious.Have passed 70, I try to keep alcohol consumption low
Yes, and we also have private stores that offer more cold product. As I recall, in Cal-Land (BC) they still have Gov. Controlled liquor stores?
You sure you're not actually from England? And, hey, it's true.... the utensils are set in a particular way...
Tally ho, old chap.
This tells me you drink with your eyes.Liquors and wine in boxes because the Gov. says so? No thanks....
I always drink with my eyes wide open... you never know what you might hit when you pass out!

You sure you're not actually from England?

Ay, Cal... the Continental Euros taught the English on this.
Even North American restaurants follow the standard place setting. It's one of the basic tenets of a civilized society.
And the napkin goes on the right side, NOT on top of the plate. Yikes.
Oh my, I can't wait for more of these nuggets of wisdom. It's one of the basic tenets of a civilized society.
OK. more nuggets of wisdom.... 😀 😀 😀 😀
Pears in wine make a great dessert
Baked apples with brandy are fantastic.
Crema Catalana is awesome
Don't smoke but the Andorrans will sell it to you dirt cheap.
My cousin is skinny but he sure likes whipped cream on his flan.
