Me and my biz partner had to visit a client in south central Sweden, so we drove from Copenhagen. Being hungry and tired we looked for a place to eat -- saw one with a lot of cars in the parking lot, hotel + restaurant combination. We assumed it was a Rotary or civic club luncheon that afternoon. I guess they don't get many Americans so the owner took us to a table, showed us the smorgasbord and plied us with all sorts of fish, potatoes, meats and summer fruit. They took Amex!
The French would say, to find a good inexpensive restaurant, look for a place in which two priests are eating.

Science day at the Harwell science campus. Youngest two got their first taste of LN2 ice cream. I'll need to up my game as they really liked it.
Harwell AERE 1971 -- the epicenter of optimization algorithm creation. Fletcher. Davidon. Powell. Polak. Good times!!
it's changed a bit since then. Almost no AERE signage left since they renamed the place. I remember standing on top of the DIDO reactor in the 80s and asking why they didn't use all the heat for a swimming pool 🙂. Lots of good science there still though and some great young scientists (not that I am biased)
The weather is starting to heat up, and I've started making meals I can mostly prepare ahead of time.
Here's some meat-muffins and gravy, with some leftover linguine. No pecarino today, so it got some grated 2 year cheddar.
Not the usual sauce, this got a couple dollops of my Blueberry and Goji berry unsweetened compote in it for something a little different.

It is finished smoking and in the oven in a tented pan with water in the bottom to finish cooking. It needed about five hours to finish cooking when I took it out of the smoker. It spent four in the smoker.
Yes. For a 8# Butt I go 9 Hrs. total. 4 to 5 for smoking at 170,then 200,then in the oven at 250 under foil for the last hours. Never fails to meet expectations. The test is the blade bone pulling free easily.
I only didn't heat an eye by blinking and pulling back.
I roasted a couple of purple sweet potatoes while also starting some pulled pork.
This time didn't poke any holes in the united and unspiced potato skins, to allow steam to escape. The potatoes are soft moust and tasty, but next time I'll be off to the side before poking holes in them with a fork, just after removing them from a hot oven.

That looks really good.and I've started making meals I can mostly prepare ahead of time.
And it is a thing of beauty. It is finished smoking
Yes Grasshopper, lesson needs only be learned once. Try using metal rod, poked through center lengthwise. Grasshopper not deal with face burn and will have more even cooked potatoes.but next time I'll be off to the side before poking holes in them with a fork,

Not a lot of time in the kitchen during the summer but found some of the 13" tortillas, a log of cheese and thought, hmmm... pizza works.
Pretty regular for around here:
Whole wheat tortilla
Home sauce
Cheese (for glue)
Tiger prawns
Pepperoni
Bacon
Cheese (to bind)
Mushrooms
Black olives
Cheese (to bind)
Green Peppers
Cheese (to top the pizza)
Yellow onion (on top to brown)
This is pizza #2.

I'm back.... one month trip... food was fantastic... took pictures.... family's restaurant... other restaurants... tapas... our own cooking in our rented flat... Taking us some time to settle into the routine, download pictures, get over the 9 hour shift, go from fully urban to absolute suburban...
Here's some Basque tapas at a place in the Plaza de Catalunya in Barcelona. That's stuffed pimento, jamon iberico and boquerones. I'm not showing the chistorra. Oh, that's a view of the jar of chilled, dry sidra ( an apple cider ).
The food was downright incredible.
Nothing like going downstairs and then walking down... WALKING... to the front door and within a block we had fresh pastries, two large supermarkets, wine store, fresh bread... walked 24,000 steps per day.... family fed us like kings.
Imagine... drinking chilled red wine at 11:30AM.... Great Ribera Del Duero tempranillos and Rioja/Panades Grenacha Noir...
The quality of the food was incredible... it was FRESH...
We're planning on a six week trip next year.

I suppose you want pictures of a real paella?
This one feeds three people, it was six, so we had two. I had sangria with it. at a beach "merendero".. Castelldefels.
My cousins would drift between Castilian and Catalan. When they remembered me they'd drift back to Castilian. But it was OK, wife and I had the paella and the sangria.... That's my oldest cousin, he was serving and paid for the whole dinner. ;-)
Oh a different type of paella, this one is with morzillas, no seafood. Styled from Alicante. This one is made the Old Style, with a covered ring shaped pot. I think we can use the shabu shabu pot for this.
The salad was incredibly simple and tasty.... Add salt before the vinegar and finish it by drizzling with very good olive oil... in that order. Salad was eating family style. Cooked by another cousin for Sunday Dinner ( around 2:30 PM ).

Verbena de San Joan... 6/23. At 10:30. A late dinner even by their hours, normally this is a 9PM meal. This is normally a "light" supper.
Two types of jamon iberico, fuet iberico, three milk (sheep, goat, cow ) fresh cheese, three types of potato omelettes and bread/tomatoes/aioli... so you can make your own pan amb tomaquet at the table.
This is what a pan amb tomaquet dinner looks like... sort of charcuterie, tomato is rubbed into the bread with good olive oil.... the aioli was for the omelettes... but I also rubbed it on my bread.
Wine was excelllent.
We had a real good Coca de Sant Joan and flan for desert. Outside the fireworks went on until 2AM. My cousin knows the baker, he's retired by now but makes special orders for his friends. His son owns the shop now.
Connections..... Foodie connections in a town known for great food. And... a lot of it was free for us. What else can you ask?
OK, I'm gonna have a night cap and dream of the veal...

OK, one more for tonite.. this was a supper we put together in our rented flat. It was 9PM, sun sets around 9:30PM.
Sandwiches with tomato, tuna and cheese. More sliced bread not seen, same type of cheese as above, real pate de fois gras, longaniza de Vic.. the salad is lettuce, fresh tomatoes, olives stuffed with anchovies, white asparagus, sweet onions.
The taste of the ingredients was amazing, but you had to go shopping before noon... they don't order a lot, everything is brought in fresh every morning around 9AM. Prices were cheap!
Looking at the pictures of the trip, we have about 5000, museums, churches, food, family, walking down the streets.
I think we were watching the Euro at the time.... Spain is in the final! Excellent, epic games this week between Spain and Germany and Spain and France.
