Greatest Bookshelf Speakers Ever?

… with good ears to explore the sub 4” category of drivers to determine which is the best of the lot ...

Again no best. Some are not good, but there are many that excel, each with different strengths and weaknesses.

And price always need consideration, a “best” 3” @ $1k, is not best if the application has a budget of $100 and those drivers are damn close.

Reactions: gregulator
More mass :
  • Frequency response lower
  • Less sensitivity
  • Worse transient response
  • Harder to control
  • Less displacement
  • More wear and fatigue of the suspension
etc...
Some of these issues are observed by listening, note Physics is based on observations. The apple falls on the head of I. Newton as first observation.
Speaker driver is a bunch of compromises.

Note I prefer that type of exchange 🙂

To stay on the subject a loudspeaker is also a bunch of compromises ?
I'd suggest you look at the link and the attachment.
The video has a room with more professional audio experience then you would find just about anywhere.

Listening?
Factual knowledge, beats ones ears every time

Thank you ! Really interesting !
Not very agree with your conclusion, we model physical things and we think model well with all the parameters. Two much confidence in "science" and we should can bin old theories. Audio should be a science in progress. I believe in observations.

Interesting this conclusion :
Inductance is the key to driver transient response - ask for it when transient response comes up !
It is an advantage for small drivers.

Science has nothing with "believe", but everything with hard evidence.
Observations are nothing without Hypothesis, Theory and Law. Newton observed, but than gave as Theory and Law based on evidence.
Which Theory and Law you invented, based on your observations?
