Pearl 3 Burning Amp 2023

Generally speaking Ariston made nice ttbls. One accessory that I have mentioned before is a mechanical arm lifter to lift the arm at the end of play. There are a couple that I am familiar with, 1 is the Q-Up and the others are based on the Audio Technica Safety Raiser, Lifter. If there is room to fit the base of the later these are quite a bit nicer than the former, but in a pinch the Q-Up does the trick.

If the inputs are just "open", it can lead to quite some oddities re noise... they need load.
I shorted the inputs and the white "whooshing" sound is totally gone. Open RCA's were little RF antennas!

I hope the audio gods are pleased and will allow me to return to my home in WA now.

Then its on to find a good used turntable....it's for me ma. She's a bit partial to periwinkle blue.

@Kokanee if you search on line you can find a cafrtridge/arm resonance calculator, try Vinyl Engine. This takes the effective mass of the arm and cartridge as well as the rated compliancy of the cartridge into account. The goal is to have the resonance frequency of the arm cartridge just outside of the warp range, 8-10 Hz, IIRC.

@6L6: Just finished replacing R27 with a 680R; only had a 1/4W R on hand and hope that is OK.
Am listening to the PhonoPre now and it sounds great -- just like it did before replacement...
...and why did the old phrase "if its not broken keep repairing it until it is" keep coming to me?
Wait a minute...
...am settled in the listening chair with a spaniel on my lap and, yes...
...yes...
this spaniel is definitely more affectionate than before the R change.
I see it now!
Seriously, have a DL-103 in house bought new and never used. Am thinking of trying it out now that the Bliue Quintet is getting older.
But those microline MC carts look awfully good. Have a Hana down in the valley and its sounds fine.

This is my first time ever dealing with an RIAA phono preamp. I had no clue how sensitive they are. When tapping gently on the input wire made an audible tapping in my speakers (sounds like when you tap on diaphragm of a stethoscope), I then began to understand how truly sensitive they are.

I guess in an ideal world we should use metal blanking plates for XLR holes and also perhaps covering up the cooling grate with fine steel mesh on top and bottom plate. Could help eliminate noise paths as those are certainly openings in chassis?

Are the Nuetrik XLR blank plates metal? I made some 3D printed plates, but obviously not gonna help with EMI.
I bought those cover plates, but don't recall material made of. Will check it out when I get home.

@Kokanee The DL-103 has a "low compliance" suspension. Meaning that it's stiffer than most other cartridges, and needs a heavier arm (effective mass, not tracking weight) to keep it in place. If the arm is too light it doesn't play well.
Which always made me wonder why in the wide world of sports Infinity shows one mounted to their Black Widow arm....probably the lightest weight arm I know of.

Hello All,

So I guess that we could / should have a dummy load to do a sanity or noise check on our project RIAA preamplifier.

We could short the input with a 60R resistor* - the equivalent of a 1 nV input.

Recently I purchased a

AT91 - Cartridge

to use as a dummy Load. A Moving Magnet cartridge for less than $25 on ebay.

The AT91 has all the inductance and resistance, it is the real deal.

In a day or so I will post a measurement of the P-3 + AT91 on my bench.

Thanks DT

* Thanks to jackinnj for the 60R resistor idea.

The 120 Hz hum is back :cuss:It is very odd and I suspect my Naim may be part of the problem. It is relatively insensitive to volume and even when I mute the Naim it comes through, although knocked down about 10dB. I know that Naim gear is very sensitive to any stray inductance but haven't a clue if that applies to a phono preamp. Hopefully I can get my Tubes4HiFi SP14 figured out soon, I see an IP in my future in any case 😉, so that I can sell my Naim. In the meantime I'll have to grab something from work to try, or I suppose that I could use my Advent 300 in a pinch.

Not a good match for a DL103 if memory serves. Matter of fact extremely low mass arms was a fad that faded decades ago because the resonance frequency with any but the highest compliancy cartridges is undesirable.
But they are the bomb on many mm cartridges. It was wonderful in the day with Ortofon super OM 30 and Shure V15. Both of which I still own in like brand new condition and spare original stylus. So it's getting ready to serve on my extra turntable. I got the arm years ago. That said, Why Infinity showed a DL103on it I have no idea.
