It would be for purely aesthetic reasons in order to match the vertical slots on the monitors. But it also like to bottom front mouth since it is very discrete.Probably not, but why alter the front panel with a vertical mouth when both enclosures have the same 16" wide by 16" deep dimensions?
I like your suggestion @weltersys and see how that could be an improvement in output, for this project however I am looking for a subwoofer where the driver is hidden.

The slot exits could be on the left and right to match the aesthetics of the vertical slots on the monitors:
The red lines are roughly where the "L" bass reflex port path could be placed.
The driver and side slots could be placed near the bottom if you prefer that aesthetic.

The low end would be nearly the same, the slot will make a narrow band peak in the upper response, followed by a drop in response something like this response from a SLOB (slot loaded open baffle):So this would perform more or less as the BR boxes you modeled before?
The frequency of the peak and (dips) depend on the depth and volume of the slot.

Hofmann's Iron Law = loud, low, small...pick 2.
Negative flare TH = low & small.
Negative flare TH is still more efficient than a BR and can be near the same size.
In it's simplest form, a single fold TH requires the same number of panels as a BR without bracing...7.

The response in post #31 would be close to worst case, just used for illustration.
Using a very small plenum volume with two narrow side exits may result in only a 3-4dB peak up in the 500-600 Hz range, the 10th harmonic of 60Hz, (JBLutz, the OP is only interested in the 20-60 Hz range).
The LAB 12 used as a BR has very little distortion past the third harmonic, and when used below or up to Xmax, those won't amount to much from my measurements and listening.
