10-inch Satori Coax (Mofi Pointsource 10) .. close-up pictures!

Hello Home-Coax Hificionados!

Stumbled upon some large size pictures perfect to wait for the real deal :

Right click every picture and choose open in a new tab for full size picture!

The magnet and the basis plate is quite disappointing , I have expected a lot more to be seen!

For $7000 speaker for the pair it's a mild shock but still a shock!

Is SBA really trying to sell us such a piece of uninspired metalwork?

Please update with an improved mk2 version and plenty of visual pleasures!

See Dayton Audio Signature Series , it's a killer!

Even the alienz have bought some for their kidz 🙂

remember watching a video review of this when they banged on about what good value it was for the money then started taking it apart and talking about what a well made crossover it was . looked like someone in China had just chucked it together without caring the parts were all wonky .

A few years back, I attempted to rebuild a set of Andrew Jones speakers. The "Infinity Prelude."

I was going to chuck the subs in the trash, because they looked really cheap. Then I ran a TS sweep on them, and the specs are no jokes; they make not look like much but those subs really dig deep. Then I measured the distortion, and it's very good.

Moral of the story? You can't judge a loudspeaker driver by how it looks.

A warning sign is also that they are hiding the passive filter network in every review and video of this speaker line .. must be the 9th wonder of the world 😎

Or maybe a reincarnation of Pharaoh Cheops creeping thru the interior looking for his maiden 🙂

This speaker needs some scrutinizing!

kind regards , your central scrutinizer (music IS dangerous)

Apologies if I am mission something obvious, but where does it say that SBA had anything to do with that driver?

Also, Sinar Baja (the factory) is a huge OEM producer in Indonesia, but not all the drivers they make are SB Acoustics (the brand) designs. They make a ton of drivers for other manufacturers and they make several lines in their own name that are cheaper than the SBA branded ones IIRC.

EDIT: As explained here by AudioXpress: https://audioxpress.com/article/factory-tour-sinar-baja-electric-and-sb-acoustics (full article in the download)

Because the smaller model Sourcepoint 8 ($3000/pair) is equipped with the coaxial SB MW19 .. blah blah .. slap me happy .. or just google it!

Ah - here it is : https://www.soundimports.eu/de/sb-a...GeFTKYeH_FTBkMTgyK6vIAGKEHLh2o6IaAhcyEALw_wcB

The fact that the old Yamaha NS 10 is still in use in many recording studios round the globe speaks miles about those recording "engineers" and the audio biz in general!

Don't trust those guys!

They can beam your money out of your wallet faster than lightning 🙂

Again, you may be right but I am unable to find anywhere to confirm that? What makes me doubtful here:

  • The cone and basket doesn't look like the SB papyrus cones to me?
  • The exploded diagram and the driver picture you like to above doesn't mean
  • I actually looked briefly at the Sourcepoint speakers at a local dealer a couple of weeks ago and I didn't get the impression that they were using Satori drivers (or anything like that).

It may well be produced by SB for MoFi, but until I see evidence to the contracry I would think that it is a customised "standard" coax-driver just made with parameters that Mr. Jones specified.

The similarities are obvious ... a few weeks or month ago we discussed already about the Satorian Coax Mysteries here and the designer Ulrik Schmidt showed up here himself and updated the old data sheet from year 2018 to the actual one . Did not say a word about Sourcepoint 8 speaker so I concluded SBA is making the drivers for AJones and any difference is not worth mentioning!

ps .. maybe I live in a parallel world better than yours 😎 so I have lots to critisize here!

Definetly, not a Satori. Neither SourcePoint 10 nor 8. It might be some custom drivers there.

I have this feeling of deja moo.

https://www.diyaudio.com/community/...-wife-mrs-magicdome-having-a-new-baby.400057/

The thread above is the one that seems to be referenced obliquely regarding the Satori co-ax, where basically the same discussion played out. In it, USXX also says: "Please be advised that this is a midrange/tweeter coaxial driver (i.e. not a mid-woofer). Despite the fairly low resonance frequency of the "woofer", it is not meant to be used at the lowest frequencies, due to limited excursion capability (this is a deliberate choice/decision). It will easily operate down to 70-80 Hz, though"

And the Sourcepoint 10 is US$3699-3999/pair, so the whole $7,000 thing seems to be coming from the parallel universe also. Or maybe we're talking New Zealand dollars. Might I suggest Fijian dollars for future conversations? That will sync up nicely with a 5-year plan to get a sheep and a cow and breed horses. Gotta go find Kristine now.

For instance , the large dia. metal disc reflects much more sound than those magnets that the SB Acoustics Satorians use! Also , the large dia. spider makes no sense (again , massive reflections) because the ribbed surround determines already the system compliance! Regarding minimizing reflections within the driver it's a cheaply constructed driver ... I wonder why AJ has spend full 2 years on this design??? I see nothing special or problematic .... maybe we see an improved version next year 🙂

How does it measure and perform? that's the real test. how something looks internally is secondary.

You have to remember the engineer / designer is given a set of constraints to work with. Budgets exist in any industry / product. There are very few industries where there is "no holds barred" on design and production costs. Any that exist already have their target market / customers identified and in many cases have pre-sold the products.

I'm not a brain surgeon, but I fail to see how these 2 are the same driver:

Okay okay I got it and confess I was to quick on assumptions ... but you don't need to beat that dead horse again and again , we all making errors sometimes , I am not perfect!

My intention was to steer the attention towards those dominant un-satorian resonances and their impact on the resulting sound!

My assumption is the AJ wondercone is plagued by the same resonances because cone geometry rules here .... indeed the stereophile measurements show a peak in the critical area but could have other reason(s).

Btw - have you ever realized how loud it is inside the box behind the cone?

With 92dB in 2m distance it is 30dB louder inside the box that is starfighter/jetplane level ... tough job for such a thin paper cone withstanding the internal reflections , must be a product planted by Chuck Norris or his son 🙂

Only the toughest survive :

Once again you are jumping to a conclusion based on assumptions you can't even back up with facts? Also, you seem to forget (or ignore) that all engineering - including loudspeakers and drivers - is one endless list of compromises and tradeoffs that must be managed?. I'm pretty sure that AJ knows this better than most people in here.

If you don't like the result (or the price) that's fine, but questioning a design based on half-arsed assumptions about engineering that you don't fully understand is very poor form. If you want to engage in that sort of thing, I can only point you to the ASR forums where this seems to be the norm 😉
