For my current setup, I want eARC HDMI since I am using my TV as the streamer. Toslink is also acceptable.
For practical use, I would like stereo analog inputs (Unbalanced and/or balanced) so it can function as an amp when using anything upstream.
For more flexibility, I would like to add streaming capability while displaying song info, but that would be stage two.
For simplicity sake, a three channel Hypex plate amp would work except,
1. I want FIR filtering capability. I don’t believe that is yet an option.
2. When the plate amp fails, if it’s no longer produced, my speaker is also dead.
3. I don’t like the look of plate amps in speakers.
4. I want to use either the Hypex NCx or Nilai amps and they’re not available as a plate amp.

Do you have an eARC HDMI receiver for linux? For my current setup, I want eARC HDMI since I am using my TV as the streamer.
Edit
I should have said HDMI ARC. I won’t need full blown eARC.

No I don’t have anything. I prefer to endlessly research before making hasty and likely wasteful purchases. Given my history, I’m likely many months away from really building anything.
This is for a 3-way speaker build for which I’ve only purchased some Morel SCW636s and have now gone down a convoluted path to include an ambitious active crossover with amplification.
I have other audio projects to finish before I can make progress on this one.

AFAIK the HDMI output on RPi does not have HDMI ARC feedback, e.g. https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=259538 . That means you would need some HDMI ARC receiver (i.e. HDMI transmitter with audio input feedback) which could be somehow connected to RPi (I2S or USB). Even if there is one (I have never heard of any), I am afraid the added latency (HDMI receiver -> buffer -> CDSP processing with two buffers in between -> buffer -> output soundcard) will ruin your TV lip sync.
There are projects (here and ASR) with SPDIF input, but they struggle with SPDIF input samplerate detection (doable though) and the latency is at the edge of usability for lipsync (very small buffers = high chance of dropouts).

Latency. With all those buffers, I was scared of that. I’ll need to read up on SBC options, like Radxa and assess my priorities vs my wants.
I think what you’re trying to achieve can be done with a Hifiberry DAC+DSP with two additional PCM5102a DACs attached via I2S… gives 6 channels with a powerful ADAU1452 DSP. I have that setup driving a single three way speaker (Scott Hinson’s MEH synergy horn) and a sub via 5 channels of 3e TPA3255 amps. Only limitation is that all the DACs are single ended with these components. I have 1x SE to diff converter and use the stereo DACs as mono Differential, which gives me the 4 channels I need. Excited to collaborate here because I too am thinking of how to optimize this approach and upgrade to purifi or Niali at some point 🤩
Well I won’t be contributing much worth. I’m researching and won’t have time to build anything till next summer. I suffer greatly from analysis paralysis - I sweat the small things endlessly too. Hopefully after a few months of researching, I can come up with a great solution for my needs.
Do you want a fancy DAC, or are you really thinking active crossover and DSP? This open source 8 DSP channel RPi board just reached 1.0: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/freedsp-octavia.393804/post-7467499
