I've been here for 20 years. Yikes!

I searched for some common 4-letter words (have, been, etc.) older than 11-10-2000.

We, the user base, have indeed changed a bit in 20 years, some more than others.

The entire world of audio and its reproduction has changed considerably in 20 years. 20 years ago, a good majority of listeners had "home theater" systems and shaking the neighbor's walls with LFE during a movie was a measure of success. 10 years ago, it seemed that everyone under the age of 40 had white wires coming out of their ears. Today the white wires have turned into little white rods. Does the majority of the listening public care about HiFi reproduction, or even know what it is?

The discussion in these forums seems to have remained far more constant than that over the years. Of course, technology marches on, parts come and go, especially in the semiconductor world. Where will we be 20 years from now?

Of course it has changed greatly. 20 years ago, questions got simple answers. If you asked what connector to buy, you just got a recommendation on brand, no lecture on science or pseudoscience or audiophoolery, just a straight up answer (it appears even cynics like Neutrik 😀 ). To me, it didn't appear that anyone was consciously chasing nostalgia, it was a mainstream hobby of technically minded people.
Now it is altogether different. IMHO the cable sellers won the battle.

Yesterday was my 20th anniversary here!

I came from the newsgroups rec.audio.tech, rec. audio.car. I was intending to build a car preamp based on the AD797 and looking around for info when the forum showed up in a search. Newsgroups were showing their age then and this was a more interesting place. A bit more quiet at the time…

Not long after joining, I saw “Nelson Pass” and assumed it was a fanboy using your name as a moniker. I was shocked to find it really was The one and only hanging out with us.

Thanks to everyone that’s contributed!

i remember the great debates between Stuart Yaniger and Thorsten Loesch, objectivist versus subjectivist, guess who won?
we the members of course, nowadays the heat have subsided i think, and China DHT tube prices have started to come down, today the CBB60 film caps have come in sizes as high as 100ufd/450vac. it is now possible to make power amps without using the electrolytic caps in the main psu......

What I would be interested in is whether you guys have seen changes in the forum over those 20 years.
As far as I am concerned, the forum is different today than 20 yrs ago, in many aspects.
That also your perception?
Of course, I have also changed in those 20 years so that may also be a factor.
Comments?

what i earned here is never to have a fixed belief, physics rules and you obey its laws or it bites you..
also, no matter how good you make an amp, it is still a poor facsimile of the original performance...
