Finally! Bought a pair of real Danley

So you'll have 3 pairs of Danley's products make comparison on an environment you know!
I'm jealous. 🙂

You'll have sh60 and sm80 that's it?
If you could gives more info on the 80 when you get them it would be really great ( type of driver, volume used for back chamber, angle used for the waveguide,...).
I'm really curious about it.

I
I bought an SUV so I could move a rented set of SH50s

That was... dumb.

Possibly the most boring vehicle I've ever owned (Mazda CX5)
I suspect that's probably why they sell as well as they do.... But I look at cars very differently to how I look at speakers. The former is an emotional experience, while the latter is there to deliver the emotional experience.

Also as a side note I agree entirely, I used to work at a Mazda dealership and while they did their job, there was nothing at all special about a CX5, I'd much rather the Mazda 6 wagon to be honest.

Krivium: I hate to disappoint you, but I will probably not do any measurements of the SM80. In the first place, to collect the information you want would likely exceed my skills. And secondly, I will likely re-sell the SM80 and I don’t want to risk damaging them.

Used Sellers: Most of my buying and occasional selling is via Ebay. This is probably due to inertia more than any other factor. I’ve been a member for over twenty years. I’ve browsed on Reverb. It’s worth mentioning that these often cross-list on Ebay and no doubt other marketplaces.

Thanks for all the interest so far. I may post a “review” of the SM80 and the SH60 after due course. If I can figure a way, I may even set up both pair so I can A/B them. For now, consider this a mini-review: One of my “reference” songs is Peter Frampton’s arena rock song “Do You Feel Like We Do”. Whether through studio trickery or just lucky recording this track captures the stadium crowd ambience better than most such efforts. On the SM80 it was most impressive. I hear details I’d never heard before.

It’s worth mentioning that the above song is mp3. Nearly all my listening is similarly compressed sources. I realize this is a compromise, yet in my experience, it’s amazing how much detail comes through even with such allegedly diluted source.

As enjoyable as the Yorkville were, it’s time to say goodbye to them. I bought them about 8 years ago for $800. They were “for parts” then, and there are even fewer parts now! (Crossovers were bad, so thrown out, as well as grilles that were missing parts.). What remains is a rough looking box, but usable for active crossover system.

I’m open to other ideas, but for now, I plan to offer: (2) Yorkville Unity U15, modified for active amping, at no cost but you pick up. I’m in the greater Tampa Bay, Florida area. If you are interested, please message me.

A postscript: Sadly, the Yorkvilles will be going to the landfill. There was no interest on Freecycle and even here, just two replies. Thanks to the guy who came to door and tried (speakers wouldn't fit his vehicle) and the one who asked if I'd cannibilize the drivers -- I said no, not worth my time.

Here is a mini-review of the new-to-me Danleys. Comparisons are of course subjective. I was not able to A/B the speakers. The U15's were in place for about 8 years so I have an idea what to listen for.

SM80: These were used for exactly two weeks. I crossed them at 200 Hz over my DIY subs. I'd have to say they are "better" than the U15s, but can't say precisely by how much. Certainly not six times better (based on used purchase cost to me).

SH60: These are the first speakers I've ever owned that at, 130 Lb. are too big for me to lift, much less move. I had to hire two guys. Now, beyond any question, they are better than the U15s. But are they 7.5x better? I'd say not. But I've onlly got one week's listening experience for them. The only thing I've found wrong with them is that some of the rigging bolts were gone, leading to wind noise. New bolts are on order. Meanwhile, using West Virginia* technology (e.g. duct tape over the holes.)

Other than EQ-ing by ear (really dialed down the highs), I found I got a much better image by moving my couch about three feet further back than was the case with the U15. The SH60s are keepers, for sure. I have a 24-db/oct high-pass at 41 Hz as recommended; my "subs" really didn't seem to improve it muich, so I'm running the SH60 full range for now. I know I'm missing out on the bottom octave or so, but siince my audio needs typically do not require the sonic emulation of a major battle scene or of a Saturn V launch at close range, I do not feel deprived.

They are everything one coudl hope they'd be. Performance is optimal as can be for speakers designed for a crowd of a hundred or a thousand, being used in a suburban living room. 😀

In theory, I got excellent deals on both Danley pairs. I'd guess I got each pair at half of new cost, but really don't know. This is one of the great advantages of buying and selling quality used gear -- less depreciation. Now if only one could do something about shipping costs, sales commission and taxes.

*Far from a slight against that wild wonderful State, that's a compliment. Hillbillies are known for their ingenuity, whether it's being able to cobble together a still merely using spare plumbing odds and ends and the radiator from Pa's old '70 pickup, or being able to keep the muffler tied on with a piece of string and get a few more miles out of Great Aunt Mabel's old '65 Biscayne. As one who lived adjacent to that fine State much of his life, I defend the integrity of these fine Aemricans and am saddened they and their like are termed "deplorables." 😎

...To the landfill! 😧😱

Oh no... there must be someone surely interested into MEH within your area. If i were closer to Florida...
Have you tried to advertise about them in EDM or metal forum, i'm sure it would make a great monitor for a soundsystem.

Hello, I'm in Ohio. Sadly I can't drive out there to pick those up, and apparently you feel it wouldn't make sense to ship them (the yorkvilles), and you're probably right, cost wise. But scrapping the cabinets and just shipping the internals and the horn lenses... maybe that could work? I don't know exactly what is in said Yorkville's, i would need more specific model info because I don't know what I'm looking for... i only found some modern sound reinforcement gear by that name.

I recently made this forum post: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/looking-to-buy-horns-horn-based-speakers.401068/
And someone there told me about your post here. It would be a shame for those to become trash... truly sad no one in your area cares or understands their value, not even in monetary terms, but in music enjoyment terms.

Sorry, but halfway there already. I'd called my trash company last week to arrange a large item pickup. They refused my refuse (so to speak) because it's considered "electronics" and hazardous waste??? Although there are a few construction dumpsters nearby, I did nto want to risk the chance of being busted or more likely, a wrenched back. In desperation, I found that one speaker would just fit into my waste container, which the automated loader accepted today 😈. So hopefully the 2nd will vanish next Thursday. Yes, I am sorry these didn't find a new home, but it wasn't for lack of me making a reasonable effort.

Postscript on the new SH60 (Soldermized Horn): I simply couldn't resist customizing (Soldermizing) them somehow, so I've done a quick and dirty version of the Geddes foam plug. the old 30 ppi foam I'd saved wouldn't fit the larger volume and it was the wrong shape anyway. So I went for the Soldermizer solution which I'd used in the Yorkvilles for a while: polyester stuffing (e.g. for pillows). Easy installation, just remove twenty screws from each speaker, stuff, and then reattach grill. I didn't even lose any parts to my reckoning. And true to form, I left a Solderizer touch: Right speaker has the free stuffing tool I fialed to remove, and a couple screw heads were stripped slightly. In theory, my mod is 100% reversible save in the case the tool works its way into a port and gouges a woofer or something 😕

Can I hear a differerence? I did a quick a/b when just one speaker was stuffed: slightly duller highs as would be expected. Other than that, no I cannot tell a difference. I couldn't with the U15s either. But look, a tweak is a tweak. It's part of the hobby. If you are satisfied with what you bought the way it came, you are unworthy of being called an audiophile. But I can listen knowing that pipe resonance and alleged HOM are well damped and the stuffing tool is making some random enhancement of the right dispersion. 🤔
