Burning Amp 2023!

"Will they serve "Petaluma Pelican" for lunch?"

A bit of explanation might be required here. Petaluma, before thousands of people moved there (starting in the late 60's of so?) was a fairly sleepy agricultural town with a major highwy (US 101) a small port on a river to the SF Bay, and a coastal railway running through it. It was famous as a place where most of the chicken sold to towns and cities around the Bay Area and perhaps more widely in Northern California originated. Eggs too. Of course chickens and eggs were produced in almost every agricultural area, but Petaluma had the name.

First, recall the Album name and cover to Hall and Oates Abandoned Lunchonette.

Next, check out what is called "Diner Lingo":

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diner_lingo and

https://www.myrecipes.com/extracrispy/diner-slang-is-a-myth

In these diners/lunchonettes/hash houses/greasy spoons, the waiter would shout each persons order to the kitchen without passing an order slip or walking to the kitchen using this magical language. It was fun to listen to and puzzle out. It varied wildly regionally. "Petaluma Pelican" was the first verbal component of an order for a chicken dish in the Bay Area.

Sort of reminds one of the Firesign Theatre's Turkish Lesson.

I can. It just adds three days' worth of car rental fees. But Motel 6 in Petaluma is considerably lower cost than Holiday Inn in San Francisco, so maybe it's a wash. And, heck, maybe I'll add a few days to the trip and drive further north on Hwy 1. I haven't made that drive since year 2000.

A bigger question is whether I'll be able to get travel medical insurance at the time. I have some ongoing issues that started in early April and because the issues are "ongoing", i.e. "not stable", I can't get insurance. I've had to cancel my trade show appearances ($2k loss) and visits with friends in the US this year so far. I may be able to get insurance through the airline or travel agent. Stay tuned...

The location is the Petaluma Community Center, an absolutely wonderful venue. It is a couple long blocks away from the E. Washington St exit of US 101, on McDowell Boulevard.

Logistics: The Best Western Petaluma Inn is 4 tenths of a mile from the Community Center. For you out-of-towners flying in, the Sonoma County Airport Express runs every hour from SFO and every two hours from Oakland airport. Tickets are $42 each way. It drops off at the Fairgrounds 6 tenths of a mile from the hotel.

You can also fly into the Charles Schultz Sonoma County airport 24 miles away in Santa Rosa.

There is a large shopping center across the street from the Community Center, so we will have lots of dining options nearby.

Epic! Also looks like the venue is right next to the hospital. That could be handy... 🙂 0.4 mi = 650 m; 0.6 mi = 950 m. That's pretty close. Certainly walkable.

More like 2 hours, maybe more in bad traffic. An hour and a half at 2am!
Yeah. I'm happy to outsource the Bay Area driving task. Especially for $42.
