I'm toying with the idea of building a high-gain amp with two cold clipper stages in order to get more asymmetrical clipping and harmonics. The second clipper will be preceded by an attenuator and a typical gain stage to keep the clippers in phase with each other. Dual cold-clipping may have been done before, but I haven't seen any dual-cold-clipper circuits in any amp schematic I've come across so far. Before I do any actual building, I'd like your thoughts, good/bad/indifferent, on the idea in general, and on my preliminary circuit design (schematic attached below). All input is welcome and valued!

Now where would that get us, if everyone though like that?
That's what I was thinking when I saw that reply. Look at the Soldano amplifiers - How would Mike have come up with that tone if he didn't try things that hadn't been tried yet? Jim Marshall is another great example. Progress is built on trying what's never been tried.
I think clippers are for Guitar Amplifiers, Right?
Instruments and Amps seems good for that kind of thread.
Oh . . . and for Short Wave Radios too.
Normally, Hi Fi Stereo amplifiers are found on the Tubes / Valves threads.
Many of us do not like the sound of clipping . . . unless for listening to a recording of a Clipped Guitar Amplifier.
Just Saying!

This is not the right part of the forum.
In any case, two cold stages have been used in many amps (CAA/CAE and many others), and in most of Guns’n’Roses albums, but usually one after the other, and way less cold than yours.
For an high gain guitar amp, I’d cut alot more lows on first stages.
Have fun!

Yeah, I posted in tubes/valves without noticing the Instruments/Amps section. Still new to the forum.
@zintolo: If used one right after the other, you lose the asymmetrical clipping, IE both top and bottom get clipped. I only want the bottom to be clipped to maintain asymmetrical clipping, hence the extra gain stage to flip the signal back 180 degrees before clipping again.
I definitely appreciate the thoughts so far, hoping for input from anyone who has already tried this idea in this way (if someone has).

- Dual cold clipper thoughts anyone?
