The XSD Speaker

I'm only finding a few pairs out there, and they are all 4 ohms. I understand this is not the first time they have dried up at least at Parts Express. I am assuming if they cant get them, they must not be available. Seems like someone already asked early on in the thread about 4 ohm, and it sounded like crossover couldnt be simply altered, IIRC....

I was surprised at some of the speaker suppliers, Madisound, Meniscus, Speaker City etc several others, most did not carry the brand at all. Maybe I should search places that cater to pro sound set ups?

Hey. I just saw this project, and these speakers peaked my interest... and even through YouTube one can tell that they are special. I am only wondering about why the bandwidth of the bass are so wide? If I used ... 6x10" instead, the upper roll-off from the bass should somewhat match the lower roll-off from the mid - and also keeping comb-filtering to a minimum; is my thoughts. Buy having spied on some of your projects before, I am pretty sure, I am missing something - so in order to learn: Why such a high crossover point from bass to mid?

There are lots of reasons for this choice. Midbass slam or “chest punch” is around 100Hz to 300 Hz. Let the big woofer array handle that for best effect. Floor bounce dips are there too but if handled by an array of 4 slots, the effect of floor bounce dip is minimized. Finally, the open baffle rolloff of the midrange isn’t going to go much lower.

Hi X,

Hope I'm not taking this thread too far off topic 🙂

In the spirit of experimentation I had been wondering how the top driver in my XSD-inspired build (currently a little MA 3.5inch full range over 4x 8inch woofers) would sound in a sealed box rather than OB. I've been pretty happy with the sound overall for a very cheap build, but have sometimes found the midrange a little aggressive. This is usually fine on most genres, but do find some distorted guitars can get a bit edgy (bear in mind I am using a cheap DSP amp here which likely doesn't help).

For a rough and ready test, I used a small cardboard box to encase the top driver and ran a comparative sweep, at around 1m on axis. Result is attached.

Despite the obvious reduction in midrange energy that is usually being fired out the back, what else could I expect to notice going sealed vs OB for the top driver? I'm thinking next I might make up some more permanent boxes to try this idea properly.

Try a Dagger rear sealed chamber. It is a tall 4 or 5 sided pyramid stuffed with polyfill or fiberglass. It doesn’t have parallel walls and the 5 sided one doesn’t have mirror symmetry even. I have found that a Dagger measures the same as an OB which means the rear sealed Dagger has no reflection artifacts. It’s odd that your OB response is more jagged.

Here is MA CHN-70 in Dagger vs OB:

Well bummer Parts Exspess has the PRV back ordered to 11/7, I don’t think they have a clue and just keep adding 2 weeks ever time and hope they come in. I was a little concerned to begin with as I never heard of PRV to begin with, all my attempts to contact them direct have gone un-answered I think they may be a vendor to be avoided in the future.

Yes, I just read the email from PE... I think I'll quit the project. Somewhat sad.

Come on guys . Be patient . In my daily business I have problems getting standard parts from vendors like Festo , Siemens , Sick , as parts for our production equipment . 2 years ago it used to be on the shelf parts with overnight shipment. At moment you get shipping quotes from 2weeks to 2 months for standard parts .
Corona , Ukraine , China , ... who knows
I'm working on the enclosure parts at moment and hope that everything is ready when the PRV mid driver arrives at my home .
I'm not in a hurry either .
Still waiting here for the first takers about the feedback of their finished builds and the first listening impressions .
And please , I want to see some pictures of the finished speakers , or how a friend used to call it , speaker building porn 😉 😎 👍

Hi Guys,
I hear your concerns and frustration in not being able to source the PRV driver. I’m in a similar situation and cannot make a commercial product with such a hard to find driver. We may have to do something different here.

I am considering trying the Faital Pro M5N8-80. It’s a bit more expensive but similar construction and specs. Neodymium motor, paper cone, pleated cloth surround pro driver, shorting rings on motor etc. The breakup modes on this one might be even smoother.

I’ll order a set and have to rework the crossover values and hopefully it won’t be too much of a change.

Faital Pro is a big company with lots of inventory. Let’s hope this unit works out.

Alternatively, I have already developed a crossover for the 6FE100. It actually sounds very very good. You can hear what it sounds like on the original videos on YT. I can give you guys the changes needed for that driver if you choose to go that way.
