'Upgrading’ my tweeters (can I do this?)

I'm technically unemployed thanks to horrible health but still do side work when I can. IOW, I'm self un-employed... lol.

That being said I like to focus on "the little things" that matter to me but not to most people. I don't think that's a bad thing as long as I don't obsess about things that don't make a difference. I think Tone? is being very thorough in trying to educate himself first before he puts his speakers under the knife, which is a good thing. He's detail oriented and wants to do things right the first time.

I'll spend half a day trying to get a stereo amp biased to within 1 degree per channel. That stuff matters and can be heard. Channel balance is critical IMO and getting it right on a pair of speakers is very important. I'll go to the extent of buying 2 pairs of something that isnt factory matched just to get a good pair, even if its an expensive driver, especially an HF driver. No, i dont return the less matched pair. I use them on another less critical project, sometimes selling them off with the disclaimer of not being closely matched.

Tone? Just keep on doing what makes you happy.

Anyone who has tried to follow tone?'s threads will realise that, by his own admission, he is unemployed, bored and keeping his head together by experimenting with how his speakers work.

Is that right tone??

affirmative

@Galu got it right

I’m not try to make anyone feel sorry for me.
although this does really suck from time to time.

and for anyone who is also wondering.

I lived in Greece for over 25 years. Was born in upstate NY though.
when I came back around 14 years ago at 39, I came to California alone, not knowing anyone.
with two degrees I worked a few $10 and hour and $30 an hour jobs because the money i made in Greece and saved was pennies for here.
it took me around a year and a half to find a decent job ( since I came here in 2009).

at age 39 I roomed with someone for 3.5 years as to save as much money as I could to make a nest egg for myself since I am alone here.

i saved a lot over all these years here. Which meant sacrificing some things along the way. Mind you over the years I got a few promotions so it wasn’t that bad after years.

but that is why I have money to spend now even while unemployed.
if anyone was wondering.

and maybe no one was wondering and I’m being all defensive.
lol
because being unemployed can make you defensive.

cheers

thanks man!

Ha , that’s cool that you try and match drivers. And yeah it totally does matter.
and yes that is kind of my personality as well. Focus on the little things or details.

sorry about your health man. That’s the most important of all.

That is very vague (like saying you use an amp and speakers) ... what kind of bass traps and panels?

Usually more treatment is required at low frequency ... what kind of construction is your room?

How do you know it is your speakers that are the problem not the room ... ?

With respect I just get the feeling your chasing the dragon without a plan or objective ... it all seems very random.

Actually I just realised that I don't even know what it is your trying to fix?

my room is a ‘ problem ‘ for sure.
i figured that out the first time I just looked at it.
let alone measure it.
lol

some aspects of the low freq just can’t be fixed man. No matter what.
that 50hz peak I have can’t be fixed from treatment even if you are Houdini

and please I don’t mean to come off as snarky.
i was kind of lazy to reply fully to you and apologies.

the reason is that I actually hired someone to teach me about room treatments.
it was actually a guy from the Audioholics.
after that I literally spent over a year and a half, experimenting with the room.
so much so that I built a half wall on one side of the speakers since there wasn’t a wall behind my left speaker.

so don’t worry . The room isn’t good by any stretch, but if you look at the freq plot , I’m kinda god for making it come out even that good. Lol

you can only do so much below around 300hz.

my RT60 decay time started at around 550ms and I slowly brought it down to 350ms, because I like the detail it offers.

A wall behind the speakers isn’t a matter of , if it helps or not.
you have to work with the dimensions of your room and the modes to figure out how far in they will go to sound right.

some speakers will sound better further from the wall or closer.
besides that there is nothing you can do to change the modes.

and not much you can do to change your rooms walls etc

if I were ever to build my own speakers I would pay extra to get the drivers matched as close as possible.

yes makes a huge diff

such a large mode is related to either your listening position (or mic position) or your speaker position.
measure each of your speakers separately. if both speaker do show the same 50hz peak (which I HIGHLY doubt), well then play with your listening position (mic position)
