Pretty cheapy 2-way

Visaton has all of their designs public plus there is lots of designs in their forum.
This one could fit and is real cheap:
Visaton-Monacor 2 way sealed simple loudspeaker build plans
If you want something bigger, System7 (see post #2 of linked thread) has simulated and I believe built a clone of some kind, a 2-way with an 8" (W200S or so) that you can find here.
Plus he has done many more (mostly unbuilt) designs that you can find via the search function that I would not hesitate to build if you don´t want to tackle a speaker design from scratch.

How could I forget this page:
Amplslab speaker projects
Many, many 2-way designs of various price classes.

The other thing to suggest - I'm assuming this will be your first DIY project - is that whatever your driver choices, find an existing and proved speaker from a noted designer which has perhaps been built and reviewed by at least a few people. As you can't listen to the speakers before you build them, it's important to get a feel for how your selection might sound. Most such designers' project descriptions will have this information.

By 'noted designer', I mean someone whose projects have been well documented on their website(s), and whose work is well regarded on this and other Fora. Some of these designers are already mentioned in this thread.

To get best value for money and not spend $$$ on international shipping, I suggest narrowing your search to drivers which are readily available through your local suppliers in Sweden. To which brands do you have access, please?

What brands do you have access, please
Hello Geoff!
I have many brands to choose from. I can order from all over Europe.
It costs as much to order from Sweden as from all European countries. 😊🙂
We are lucky to choose from Scanspeak, Seas, SB Acoustics, Vifa and Peerless we live next door to. Unfortunately, they are expensive here too. We have access to brands such as Omnes Audio, Tangband, Dayton, GRS, Visaton, Monacor, Morel, Faital Pro and several other brands.
Unfortunately, the price has gone up quite a bit in the last few months of drivers.

Regards
Leif

In my opinion nothing beats the peerless SDS series, price/performance. You can do a nice TL even with a single one of them. The Monacor DT300 is also nice for the money. Bonus - you don`t need a router for the frames with these 🙂
Nice.. SDS series. Ok. I shall look for them. Any suggestions?

SDS-P830656?

SDS-P830657?

How about HDS series?
What is the difference between SLS, HDS and SLS?

The Peerless 830656 (5.5") and 830657 or SDS160 (6.5") are very good for the price; the SDS160 sounds pretty much the same as the 830657 but has twice the "Xmax" (excursion) so will play a bit louder without giving up. The 830656 won't give you as much bass but no problem if you have a sub; you would need an MTM or TMM to give you enough output for your room. Both are smooth, really nice sounding with your music choices.

Many good projects for both, in various cabinet sizes. I've used the 830656 in TM and MTM, the SDS160 in TM, both with Vifa tweeters and one with a Peerless DA25 tweeter. None were my designs, they were all kindly provided by fellow DIY-ers.

If you don't have a sub, the Classix 2.5 TMMs could be an option. The Classix II TMs are suggested above by another member, but these will give you more sound output and, according to the designer Paul Carmody, have better mid-range.

https://sites.google.com/site/undefinition/floorstanding-speakers/classix2-5

A possible disadvantage of either Classix project is that the Dayton DC160 isn't that attractive a driver to look at. Which brings up another issue: "Spouse Approval Factor", if that applies to you.

There are many worthy options and I suggest doing lots of research and asking questions before you decide to go for the credit card.

Anyone correct me if i'm wrong - in order of price range:

sds: stamped steel basket, paper cones, small voice coil, no shorting rings

sls: similar to sds, but bigger voice coils and with shorting rings

hds: similar to sls but with cast aluminium frame, fiberglass composite cone.

As far as i know toutlehautparleur has the best prices for peerless speakers (edit: in europe!)

I would`n t use the smaller units as your output will be limited. Better to have less cone movement for same output. As stated above - thats the main difference, the shorting ring (its one) is placed near the lower plate, they`re not like Scanspeak motors for example where a shorting ring is both above and below the stationary voice coil centre. I would anytime prefer to buy and use 2 SDS for one HDS but thats me 🙂

(Something to consider about the Peerless 830656 & 830657, there is no need to recess the driver frames. Just surface mount.)

some 8" drivers

I ended up making a two way in a test box with the SDS160PRO and BC25TG; the bass was good and the sound was OK, but there was something 'not quite right' about the crossover. During the process I swapped over the PRO with the 830657 and thought the woofers sounded pretty much the same.

With some proper measuring equipment and someone who actually knows what they're doing, I think the combination could sound good for not many $$. And the Peerless is a cool looking driver and can be flush mounted, yay!

Peerless is ok then? Ok

Peerless SDS drivers - I haven't tried the HDS, nomex or other high end drivers - sound good, especially for the price. The Peerless DA25 tweeter is great value, very good sound but hard to find these days.

There are other brands with drivers around their price point but I haven't tried them. However for a few $$ more, the SB Acoustics PFC series are worth an optic; Michael Chua uses some of them in his projects and they also sound good.

I`ve used both - the SB13PFC is slightly better in the top end but has a breakup node that is audible (so more $$ for xover as well). But they`re for different use - the PFC is optimized for vented where the SDS works great in transmission lines & can also do sealed pretty well. Back then I used the square (truncated) frame PFCs as no round ones were available, a PITA if you don`t use a contractor with CNC to rout these for you.
