Seriously, the particular part is only part of the story (no pun). A good designer 'kneads' the collection of parts to do what he wants. Parts selection is necessarily a compromise between what's available, its characteristics, the price etc.
People like Nelson are seemingly able to 'knead' any part into submission 😉

On a fun note....
One of the contributors to this thread was nice enough to sell me a pair of Model 6A boards that arrived today.
These will replace the Model 6 boards that are mounted on heatsinks with double the square area of the stock heatsinks
after I replace the bias pots with 3296s and the Nichicon Muse with Silmic IIs.
The heat sinks attach to the new grown-up chassis.
The 70,000 uf of capacitance on each side requires a 6 ohm, 100 watt input resistor to keep the lights on, and I'm quite certain that they don't make the slightest difference in sound, but this exact set of four was available at a crazy price, and are just so much fun to look at. 🤓 The aluminum bridge is a re-purposed drywall compound pallet. 🤔
The faceplate was scrubbed and silkscreened to match my other Mark Levinson gear, which was scrubbed and re-filled 15 years ago just because I like silver instead of black.

Very helpful! I don't have to take it so seriously, trying some different parts and seeing how they work/sound seems logical (Captain).

TI just came out with a new opamp, max supply +/-42.5V, 10MHz, 40V/us, 6nV/RtHz.
That excites me because it opens up a lot of new circuits I couldn't do so far.

Ha ha... just kiddin. The Model 37 CD transport needs a lot of attention after 25 years - the "grease" that they used throughout the open/close mechanism dries out and gets sticky. The whole transport needs to come out of the chassis and be completely disassembled and cleaned, then I used a light silicone grease on the rails and the mechanism. Works well now, but i think a lot of owners get very frustrated with them and sell them cheap.

I thought the Super Lube would be good in this application because it's a very light, clear grease, but it looks like it had other benefits as well. Teflon!

Yeah, I like to think I'm very fashionable, but the fact is that the older I get, the harder it is to see the black stuff without my glasses. 😥 🧐 😅The ML gear looks great in clear anodizing.

I have one Rogue IGBT on one side of my Model 6 which shows more than double the value of the other 7 (at low boost, 21.7, 21.3, 21.7, 20.7, 21.6, 21.6, 22, 56.5 (!). Since these things aren't available any more, and I don't have anything that will match it, is there any disadvantage to doubling up the emitter resistor from .47 ohm to 1 ohm to control that excess current flow and allow me to bias that entire side up?
