Anyone recognise these old VIFA drivers ?

Hello ,

I have 20 year old speakers ,. That apparently use Vifa drive units.....mid + bass woofer

The outer diameter of both mid + woofer chassis/frame is 155mm.

DCR on mid. is 6.6 OHms ,. Both sides measure the same . DCR on parallel woofers is 3.3 ohms. Both sides measure the same ( so seems that a single bass woofer also has DCR 6 6 ohms )

The closest I can see is the Vifa M17WG-09-08 , at 170mm

I have spent hours looking at Vifa data sheets and do not see any 155mm external diameter drive units .... 149mm then 170mm are the closest

The speakers are SD Acoustics , a small UK company ( no longer exists ) so I can not imagine these bieng custom made for such small quantities

Any help much appreciated

That's a good question ...

Well the guy who sold them stated they had Vifa drivers .... And a magazine review verdict, said they used high quality drivers ( I never saw the actual full review )

But yes , realistically I just don't know

I thought the bass woofer looked a lot like the woofer below ;

Old Vifa's with a steel basket either are 146mm for the round C13 or 166mm for the C17. There also was a C11, a truncated C13 and a C20, but that isn't relevant here. The units don't look Vifa to me, e.g. the terminals of Vifa have connector spades for both sizes of cable connectors. These don't

Re: zobel, who's to say without measuring the response with/without? Given that most manufacturers cheap out on the components, it'd seem more likely it's there for a reason.

I don't think the bass driver is Vifa as I also don't recognize that "Dynaudio shaped" flat cone style from any of their old catalogs.

Thanks , I will measure with + without zobel .... I bought these as a project , the tweeters are not original ( and are crossing at 10khz 1st order )....the mid has strong output from 200 - 5khz

The woofers output to 800hz before dropping off

The sound is seriously bass heavy....mushy slow horrible bass ( in fact just using the midrange alone , the sound is very clear , with good vocals....)

Overall a sonic disaster ( so far ) ...but the cast resin enclosures are superb... V heavy and resonant free

They look like they have two magnets and two top plates giving it two magnetic gaps like the new Dayton Epique's have only with a stamped steel basket and ferrite magnets? 20 year old drivers could be SEAS or ADS or Foster drivers but more likely a Chinese OEM. They could even be made by Peerless to some companies specs. It's hard to say and with the photos you posted being so compressed and blurred I can't make out any detail so I'm just guessing.
