Help finding a midrange for the AE-12 Dipole

Okay I surrender 🙂 Active XO with some baffle step compensation would be the best, but it’s possible to build OB without.

Again, you could do this just for the bass driver (practically speaking up as high as 150 Hz), the rest of it could be passive. (..you would still need a mid. and lower mid with any reasonable sized baffle - with suggestions previously mentioned: Faital Pro and Supravox.)

You don't have to do any of it with DSP, it could be analog active.

IF you use Rythmik Audio's current-sensing sub's to around 100-150 Hz with 2 per loudspeaker of the GR SW-12-08FR, then you've got all you need for the low-end at reasonable spl's. (..active crossover for the low-pass and effective eq. is part of the amp/driver combo.)

Rythmik Audio • GR servo driver

Rythmik Audio • Subwoofer plate amplifiers

(..talk to them about which amp would be best for your design if you are interested.)

And of course Granada clones can use a heavier amp for bass drivers. Troels had a 200W Hypex for OBL-15.
Your AE woofers are very good and should give enough spl before bottoming, unless you are a bass freak. And yes much more power than 30W.

Diy dipoles are tricky, dsp and multiamping make development by protoing easy. Passive and single amp is an extreme challenge!

I know that a DSP with miniDSP or DEQX HD5 is very good.

I just can’t accept the dacs and amp’s used in such a configuration.I like a good big tube amp, grammophon and a super dac.

I begin my first OB speaker with passive filter and drive it with A-class tube amp. It was needed about 1 week to understand this was not what I expected and want. Then I used hybrid solution where bass has separate solid state amp with dipole cancellation correction EQ. Decent and satisfying results I get after I changed all filters and corrections to DSP, except bass dipole cancellation correction EQ what is still made in analog to win about 20 dB headroom in digital domain.

Hi Martin,

The AE woofers are good, but at least my AE18Dipole suffered from much higher Mms than John announces, thus even lower sensitivity as simulated per John´s data, sadly.
Passive OB is of course possible, but to design it, you´ll have to understand and to find the balance between
- driver size and Xmax
- driver TSP
- baffle size and shape
- crossover
to arrive at a sensible compromise between bass reach and sensitivity. And no, most simple efficiency figures given by manufacturers without any indication of how they arrived at their "data" should be regarded as estimated, phantasy or whatever and not data. Sorry.

All the best

Driver is the AE TDH12-4 ohm in a 5 ft3 box.

You don't need to horn load this AMT. It's around 93db, perfect match for these drivers.

Used a totally stock AudioPipe 1.2khz crossover.
