Can class D chipamp drive external mosfets yielding high power?

Hi,

Can a class D chipamp, say TPA3116D2, drive a higher power mosfet bridge, say IRF540, to yield higher power?
With 4 external mosfets and 48volt smps as supply, power levels can reach 300watts, if distortion is low that is.

I am aware that all chip protection features become unusable.

What if we restrict the bandwidth to that needed for subwoofer duty? Below 200hz.

It's not about the audio frequency. It's about the switching frequency and timing, particularly "dead time" and cross conduction.

In any case, the TPA3255 reaches your power requirements and is available in ready made modules at great prices. And you may want to consider a UCD from Hypex. Hypex Electronics B.V.
These class-D amps are getting into SMT and high frequency PCB issues where only experts should try to DIY. Do you have a 3D microscope to do your wiring with? Do you have a 500MHz scope?

It's like lots of car people are restoring 55 Chevys but very few are building Teslas, especially from scratch.
 
Check out the TAS 5634. It may be just what you're looking for, but in an integrated form. I'd post the pdf, but dont want to cause anyone trouble.

The TAS5634 seems to be equivalent to the output part of a TPA3255, and requires a TAS55xx to drive it. But TI's pages on most of the TAS55xx chips are "locked" and the available TAS55xx chips are 8 channels and may not support analog input. I suspect that TPA3255 has replaced TAS5634 for new designs.

OldDIY, there is a strange problem with your link. It only works from the notification email and not from the web page. TPA3116 is capable of 2x50W by itself so you would need a lot of 2N3055s to make a bigger amplifier. This 2x2n3055 amplifier is about 20 Watts. Here is that circuit:
