Adding a display to Rpi help

After seeing the inspirational Falk thread https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/pc-based/371976-falk-dp-01-a.html I fancied trying a display on my Ian Canada Rpi streamer.

I bought one of these as it was at the cheaper end of the scale for a starters.

I don't want the touch functionality, just to display what Moode or Volumio would show.

I powered up with 5v and it showed a 'no signal' screen so a decent start. I tried connecting to my Sky TV box to test . The picture was there but massively garbled. Maybe a resolution incompatibility. The Sky box is probably at 1920.

So I then tried plugging it into the HDMI of the Rpi. Made sure the port is active in Moode. This time just a black screen that seemed to go on and off between the blue 'no signal screen.

Any ideas. ? I maybe foolishly thought this would be plug and play!

The 'only' plug'n'play screens fo RPi are the ones that use the DSI connection.

For your screen, try adding the following to your config.txt:

Code:
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=87
hdmi_cvt 480 800 60 6 0 0 0
dtoverlay=ads7846,cs=1,penirq=25,penirq_pull=2,speed=50000,keep_vref_on=0,swapxy=0,pmax=255,xohms=150,xmin=200,xmax=3900,ymin=200,ymax=3900
display_rotate=3

You will need to install a display plugin in Volumio, and enbable local display in Moode, from memory (I only use pCP now)

Hey jimk64 check out adafruit's site for their 7" touchscreen. It has links to a tutorial on how to get the screen to play nice with the rpi. Some screens do not have a scaler and the code Yatsushiro has given you may be all you need to add to boot/ config.txt

I'm not sure if you would be interested in this alternate solution, but it works for me.

In my home I have a central computer that I use to "get" audio from the internet or play files, e.g. ripped CDs. I wrote some software to stream audio that I get from ALSA or PulseAudio across my LAN to other computers, which are located at loudspeakers. I need to use the GUI interface on the main computer to choose the source audio, change volume, and select which system is playing. I do not want to have to be physically at that computer to make changes, so instead I use a remote desktop software called "NoMachine".

I installed NoMachine on the computer, and then the NoMachine client on an old, low powered 10" tablet that is easy to carry around. This allows me to take control of the GUI on the main computer and operate it just like I am standing there in front of it. The main computer is connected to a TV, so the display is running at a huge 4K and this makes for very tiny text, etc. on the tablet. But this is no problem for NoMachine. It's quite astonishing. I can zoom and pan if I find it difficult to click on a link, etc. and there is a pop-up keyboard for entering text.

You might consider trying this for your Pi streamer before diving into hardware. You can then control it from anywhere using whatever device you choose, e.g. your phone or another computer/tablet. Multiple clients can exist, and it is easy to connect as needed.

Thanks Charlie. Sounds a bit beyond me for now but then most of this forum was when I first started! I shall certainly have a read.

So a bit of progress but something not quite there yet.

I installed those lines into the Volumio SD card...been using Moode for a while. I forgot how nice Volumio looks with thr album art etc.

So when it all booted up I saw the 'VOLUMIO' branding across the screen....looking hopeful! But when it settles in and playing music it has this screen.

Any further advice for me....seems so close!

Isn't this the same for all the audio streaming products out there?

Greg...om not sure where /how I would do any of that. Using my phone to control the software. Volumio is open and working.

Regarding psu, do you mean on the screen or Rpi? Screen has a 2 amp wallwart for testing, Rpi has a Salas L adapter

You're almost there! It's a long while since I've been anywhere near Volumio, but I think there's a plugin you need to install and launch, perhaps the 'Touch' plugin?

You are literally one step away from having it working...

EDIT: Here's the plugin, called Touch Display:

Well that didn't work! Even less showing than before! Don't even have the Volumio boot logo now or that other screen i attached before. It just cycles between blank black and blue.
Hhmm!
Thanks for all your help up to now though. I shall try adding those lines of code to my Moode SD card later and see if that works.

I HAVE A same need and same problem .
i have a RPI 4 and running moode.
strange is that i run moode 7.01 are ok with a 10inch display monitor using HDMI plug.
but when i run another version of moode like moode 8.01, the newest.
the displayer are just blank and i can only see the script runing during power up the RPI while after all the scripts when the moode started to normal (which means that i can browse the moode control by safari explorer), then the monitor go blank and black again.

dont know why some version works well but some version does not.
and does not for volumio as well.
