DIY Sony VFET lottery discussion

One of the things not necessarily noticed in the lottery is there were quite a few people who would have been in the “heavy hitter” category that recused themselves from the lottery because (from being around here for so long and so actively) they already have SITs sitting on their shelf waiting for the project to use them in... and so kept out of the lottery to give others a chance to win, because they already know that they can build the project. :)

Those of you know who you are - we thank you.

I would not be surprised if there will be a fair # of these VFet kits ending up in places like eBay / AudioMart / & other online auctions or even sold at various retail outlets around the world.

I sure as hell hope not... that would be a travesty, as the amp sounds incredible and is being sold in a format that makes it very easy to build, and completely dishonors the charitable aspect of the amp and lottery... those involved are doing this at cost. For the members and for the charity.

I echo 6l6 concern
This is Nelson Pass’s IP AND assets which is GIVEN to DIYaudio facilitated by Jason and the DIY family. Respect the gift given

With the asking price being what it is, even at cost from the many parties involved, the profit for the charities seems low to me. I for one would like to "add" to the profit to increase the proceeds to the charities, not in my name, but as a member of the DIY community.
I hope Jason will allow the invoice to us to include this option.
I've lost to many in my life to cancer.

I know but consider the #s. 180 kits and 1,428 entries, what does this translate? I would say a fair % will go to those that are putting their hat in just for the sake of it and if they win, they're just gonna store it or sell it on at a later date. The reasons are simple. All the excellent work everyone has put into getting this project alive (to make it in DIY 'KIT' form) comes to a demise. Meaning, it has become a marketable product and if it's easy for anyone to build it, then you've attracted a much wider audience of buyers.

When I looked to build my CSX1 Sony Vfet last year, there were very few completed examples in the forum. That's no surprise and perhaps do different to when I was building Mr Pass's SoZ or his Balance Line Stage preamp 20 years ago, as all we had was his documentation and schematics. I had to make the Gerber files to supply the local PCB etching place. Design the chassis. Lots of effort that would be well beyond the typical DIYer.

The authenticity is clear, when Mr Pass signs each board ? Well that's a ticket for making things collectible.

This project is such a nice gesture by Nelson, Jason, Tim and others who have contributed their time and efforts into making it available. There’s still the N channel names to be drawn and then the empty kits. Let’s keep this positive, there’s nothing to be upset about. One can still purchase VFETs from Pras and Watanabe and join one of the various threads discussing alternate designs. lhquan sit-3x, zen mod defisit & sissy-sit

Yes but none of these options would appeal to the 'random lurker' They just won't put in the effort. In the world of Halcro amplifiers that have sold for well over $100K - you need to look at the the ethics involved. High end hifi has become all about marketing and every level of the chain there are those that only do it for a buck. DIY audio is suppose to be the anti of this kind of behaviour.

Though, there is 1 major thing going for it - the VFets are unobtanium... or will that just only increase the price of the amp just like in collectable art?

This was considered beforehand.

Each production chassis is uniquely numbered and we will have a record of which member received it. If one turns up anywhere we will know its origin.

I did not received any e-mail or PM to make the purchase. Am I missing something?

In my message yesterday I mentioned that no emails would be sent sooner than 24 hours (which is in a few hours).

I needed to get some sleep, wake up and look for a new place to live as it's Saturday morning here in Melbourne (the landlord is selling my apartment and giving me 60 days to find a new one, oh the joy of renting!), handle helpdesk emails, reply here, and now I'll start work on fleshing out the store and getting these into people's hands. There's a lot to do.

If you are one of the lucky ones, don't fret that you haven't been contacted yet. Expect an email from contact@diyaudio.com in a few hours from now.
