The server farm that hosts Linear Audio has burned down:
OVH data centre destroyed by fire in Strasbourg – all services unavailable • The Register
My service provider has a Disaster Recovery Plan.
Let's see how long it takes to recover.

I like how they recommend you active 'YOUR disaster recovery plan' 🙂
Luckily a rare event. I wonder how on earth the fire supression system failed. I know Halon bombs are no longer allowed but the replacements are pretty good.
Fingers crossed for a full recovery.

Yeah, my webmaster has multiple backups and a recovery plan which he set in motion.
But he takes care of many websites, so it is quite an operation.
This is when I realize where the yearly € 500 fee is meant for.

Just found out that the server backups that the host provides were on other servers in the same building.
So that's great when the whole building burns down ..

Jan,
I knew your website was hot, but really!
Offsite backups are extremely rare. Used to bring home a weekly change disc. However we now do that to a remote site. Time to check and see if that is still working!
The news reports the total loss of just one of four buildings, so they may actually still have your back up!

Ah bother. Reminds me of the major telco whose DR site was on the same business park and both sites were high flood risk!
All errors have to be made (and shoulders are shrugged) but when it eventually goes very wrong lessons are quickly learned 😀

Apparently the onsite backups were in the same building ...
My webmaster just asked me - can you change the forwarding for your websites to:

Huh??

There's an interesting book with the title: 'Mistakes were made - but not by me'.
This was a famous quote from Dick Cheney - remember him?

xxxxxxxxx (removed by moderation) is an actual Internet Protocol address. When you type gazorg.com or such it refers to a lookup table that contains the actual address. Normally you may want to keep the actual IP address secret, but don't worry I won't turn your reference into a porn site yet!

Yes. I used to work in this business and know the human ignorance on safety and skepticism regarding working according procedures but things have changed after some expensive catastrophical events. As usual with predominantly anglosaxon driven ventures things then develop exactly in the opposite direction so absurdly stringent procedures, tons of double administration and almost personal responsibility 😀

Funny you mention that (and I think you know exactly what I mean) but AFAIK this is now mainly done in China and other places where power is cheap. It will be no surprise but Bitcoin is very environmentally unfriendly. It costs a lot of power and generates a lot of heat. I have seen enough to not want to be part of this pyramid game 🙂 I recently spoke to the owner of such a company and he told me he regretted he had allowed bitcoin companies as he felt guilty for the damage done.
Considering the character of these companies and where they are located the principles on environmental issues are quite thin. The stockholders are way more important. They know the talk but don't do the walk and are responsible for a very large part of wasting energy. This is accompanied with a lot of green blah blah but the enormous amount of heat still mostly is dumped in the air.

Got my new lab wing/cave up and running, when are you coming to explain how all those gizmos work? Maybe when we get our vaccines!, after BAF...

Would be nice to attend BAF again after several years hiatus ...

I guesss it was caused by a vintage oil dipped capacitor in an overheated class-A tube amp😀This is how a server farm fire looks ...
