I got into a discussion over an ad for an 800 dollar machine that would grind an angle on the edge of a CD. One was supposed to then paint the edge with a sharpie. The explanation was that the laser bounces up and down to the edge, reflects back, making the trip twice, still with enough brightness to screw up the data.
I argued that an untreated CD could be read into a digital file, treated, and read again, the files compared byte for byte. If all the numbers match, the treatment did nothing.
He said, "Not necessarily."

Paying 100s a foot for special wires, too late, you got me started. First it was speaker cables, Fat, pretty copper wire with thick insulation, oxygen free. Ok, fine. I can replace any OF cable with a bigger one of regular copper and beat the resistance, OF being a few percent more conductive. At those prices you could use silver!
But I didn't say much. Then it was line level cables. Well, after dropping 1000 bucks or more to replace the wires between the amps, you know they have to believe it sounds better, still I didn't get into it.
Then, They started making special Power Cables. The 6 foot wire from the wall to the amp will make it sound great, after the power flows through 100 feet of plain vanilla house wiring.
On that one I will beat my head against a wall.
Being trained professionally in electronics and servicing, and having decades of experience under my belt with all sorts of consumer entertainment products, it's not hard for me to discount and call out all the dumb, insane, and highly overpriced products that are marketed to consumers.
Naturally, the average consumer cannot readily discern what is garbage or not.
And with the internet, they are still at a loss, due to all the hype and "wives tales" told across the blogs.

To prove this BS, I would claim, it improves error correcting. Then confuse the issue ad nausea 😵 with Reed Solomon error correction, residual error rate, and so on.
What fascinates me is how folks "prove" a bogus theory by experience.
Theory: If coolant moves too quickly, the molecules won't have time to transfer the heat.
Proof: An engine was overheating, mechanic removed a few fins from the water pump, problem solved.
Reality: Swift passage of coolant causes eddy currents, like a vortex. This coolant stays in the block. Slow it down, no eddy.
Wrong theory, correct solution.

Try inserting a few random numbers into a digital music file. Sounds like something is blowing up! So they must think the errors just happen to be only in the least significant bits.

Like records/LPs, CD's are all over the map in quality level.
Naturally, it depends on the studio technician's abilities and tastes.
But I like the way my Technics handles the CD's I toss at it, I suppose it's due to the "Mash" system and buffering level designed into it.
