Filter brewing for the Soekris R2R

I’ve been running my dam1121 a few days now.
Comparing with an AD1865. I like both😊
They are good at different things and as always it a matter of system synergy and personal taste.

I also have a borrowed Denafrips Terminator to benchmark against. The difference is not big but the Terminator has an edge!

I’ll try to give some impressions. My Soekris implementation is with Salas SSLV 1.3. 3 units to supply 5VD and 5VA separately. JLsounds usb to i2s. Pass DCB1 as output stage. I only used usb input on the terminator and rca output.

The Terminator has a very big and stabile soundstage. It has a lot of low end weight which gives a bit of warmth to the sound. To give an example, during listening I thought someone was closing the outer door until I realized it was the loudspeakers. Never had this with any dac. Dynamics also a tad better in the Terminator.
When moving up in frequency the Soekris is on par. Voices sound very similar. I tried the different filters and ended up with “linear”. The top end is actually a bit more shimmering and seems to extend even higher in the Soekris.

Overall, both are excellent. Soekris might sound a bit too nice for some.

If someone has a filter for the Soekris that gives the low end definition and dynamics of an AD1865 together with the soundstage and resolution of the Soekris - please let me know

Default from delivery 1.21.

Well this *is* the thread for alternative filters. And compared to the factory ones, I think they really make the dam shine. So for a critical comparison you really should try them.

When you're talking about warmth and "grit" (as opposed to "nice") I think what you mean. And recommend you try some of the (quasi-) NOS filters:

diya_1021filt_nodcmode-skr : TNT's linear filter (2K taps) + EQHQ_lpbr_b4 + C128dp + NewNOS (without DC filter)
oneoclock's pack : as above but with Soekris' stock linear filter (4K taps)

I'm loving C128dp and think it may be the sound you are looking for. The other filters are really good too except NewNOS in my opinion. The latter can have a distorted midrange with too much grain.

Also I am evaluating gumisb's recent NOS filters and am happy with them so far, be sure to check them out! https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/att...rewing-soekris-r2r-1021filt_minimum_phase-zip

@gumisb still liking F7! Interested what that secret favourite of yours was? Also kindly may we ask for a pack without DC filters and attenuation at 22,05 kHz (Nyquist) instead of 22,50 kHz? Might just be the icing on the cake...

All my recent IIR filters give full attenuation at 22,05kHz.
My favorite is F5 with planar headphones and F7 with dynamic headphones.
Improvement is possible with better all pass filter and this is what I'm actually working on. I don’t want to close myself in tower so I'm very happy with You feedback and suggestions.
Here is filter set without DC - happy testing.

Does the filter can be defined using 4K tap as dam1121 can use them since 1.21 FW. Or do you stick to 2K tap ?

I wanted to try it out, but it plays very quietly ..🙁
