My mad friend drove over Donner Pass yesterday. I had warned him. He called as he set off saying 'hardly any snow'... Two hours later he changed his view 😀
Yeah, that happened. Our house was left without power for 48 hours or so. We live outside of town and have our own well, so that meant no water as well as no heat or lights. We decamped to my parents' house in the Bay Area for the duration.
My son in NCal just had his generator installed -- dual natgas and propane. The air was so bad last summer that they are probably going to spend half the year with us in the east.
Speaking of the Donner Pass -- we took our sons to Switz for Easter Break decades ago. I remember that we had booked into a hotel in Amsteg that evening. Couldn't figure why there was no traffic coming from the other direction. Turned out there had been an avalanche, so we had about a 3 hour detour to get to the hotel.
Around here we have -10C in the morning.
Last period of cold weather was 2 weeks ago, and there was perfect ice on the bay. All hockey kids were down there, they haven't been playing since beginning of december because of closedown.
The normaly climate seems to be about the same here as in Vancouver. +4 to -5 C, horizontal rain, slush, snow.
The moist in the air makes one to freeze into the bones.
We consume about 23 MWh but it includes a 75 sqM workshop, so ~13 MWh for the house.
In 2019 we installed a solar plant that produced 13.8 MWh in 2020, so the costs are quite ok anyway.
Our best winter was 2009-10 when we had -5 to -28 from mid december to beginning of march, 95 cm snow.
The NE winds made a surpricing phenomen, the snow cannon from the moisture of the sea Vänern (until it froze) wich some days caused 15 cm snow from the blue sky.
We were living in an old cabin from ~1810 at the time, there were 2C on the inside of the walls the coldest nights, but a stove and air heatpump made it ok.
And I remember barbecueing in just a sweatshirt at -18 C.
I have a feeling that the winters were better when I was young, sadley.

Last night we had -30C its now -22C, indoors it was +15C so I quickly made a fire in the stove, now its +20C indoors.brrrrrr...
I don’t think these are retractable...
And the treadwear rating is below zero. See them (not) work here on mostly frozen mud:

I am really not sure what to say to that video...

The guys behind that and other crazy videos seem to be capable of building some rather outrageous vehicular creations, only to wind up destroying them.
I got sent links to this one from several friends in Florida after this stunt made the news in Miami, Tampa and Orlando.

Speaking of "weather" and especially COLD weather I awoke to 9 degrees F (-13C) today, with the weather forecasters predicting "snowpocalypse." Some of the snow from last week is still on the ground, and the Weather Channel is calling for a total of 8 to 14 inches more starting tonight (Saturday) and snowing continuously until mid day Monday.

Weather, don't talk to me about weather. I live right outside of Atlanta Ga. where our winters are rather mild rarely getting below about 25F. But every 2 or 3 years we may have a day or two that gets down to 10F. Well it so happens that my old car has an electrical problem that rapidly drains the battery when it gets down to that 10F. Now how do you troubleshoot a problem like that without buying a $1000 worth of freeze spray !
You buy a battery disconnect switch. Although I suspect it is really just the reduction in battery capacity when cold makes the normal drain discharge the battery. Other option is a heater, but where you are folks might just look at you strangely using a block heater!
There are clamp around amp meters that work to DC, so you can check to see if the drain really changes with temperature.
Currently letting my car battery charge as it was unhappy this morning. Probably will get a new battery today.

No it's an electrical problem. When it acts up the car dash tells me : the gas cap is off, the parking brake is on, the passenger door is ajar, the brakes have a problem ect. And if I connect a battery charger at this point the battery charger circuit breaker trips! Last time this happened as soon as it warmed up a few degrees I put the battery charger on for about 1/2 hr and haven't had a problem these last 3 years but haven't had one of those 10F days in the last 3 years either.
As long as they're having fun/Whatever floats your boat 😀The guys behind that and other crazy videos seem to be capable of building some rather outrageous vehicular creations, only to wind up destroying them.

But it's definitely not the first car to go on water...
They way it's done and portrayed, I think it's just ridiculous, and they've probably never heard of the Sherp before.

Nice to have something to look forward to! 😀

Car model and year may help.
You may have a component that doesn't like the cold and shorts out. You may be able to find it by disconnecting one battery post and buy or make up a 12V test light to run in series between the disconnect post connection in series,
If it lights up you know you have a short. Pull fuses to find the circuit to isolate the component.
The problem may be in that warning system.

It looks like a workout with a snow shovel and a snow thrower. I have 110 feet of driveway, and my neighbor has 90 feet. Covid just made her a widow after 62 years of marriage, so if she wants to go to church, we will take her assuming the roads are passable.
If the forecasters are even close, they won't be drivable. The snow should start around midnight tonight and continue until Monday night with peak snowfall of 1 inch per hour tomorrow morning.
