The Weather

I walked out to my van this morning to take a trip to the grocery store and post office. The ground was covered with snow, and the driveway seemed rather slick. After scraping the ice from the windshield and realizing that there were NO cars traversing the main road. I got in the van, put it in reverse and eased onto the throttle to have it go sideways. Yes, my driveway was a solid sheet of black ice. With temps currently below freezing and expected to remain that way until the snow / rain / slurpee storm arrives this afternoon. It looks like I'm not going anywhere today.

So as the famous Mamas And Papas song begins to play in my head, I made these screen grabs of the cameras in my favorite vacation spot.......

So I could be safe and warm if I was in Fla.....

We have all seen the pictures of crowded beaches in Florida and other states. Right now is the peak of the tourist season and Florida makes much of it's revenue on tourist taxes, so the beaches are open. I took screen grabs of my favorite web cams. These were taken at 8:30 AM, and look pretty typical of my experience....nobody is awake to watch the sun rise over the bay from that fishing pier. Ditto the early morning walk along the beach and the pool.

It's just too expensive to go there now. We go in July or September when the place is nearly empty and we can stay for free in a friend's time share. Last September we were greeted by Hurricane Sally.

I am sure I saw an article once on studded tyres where there was a bladder that would inflate to pop the studs out when needed. Handy for these occasions.

The sound of winter tyre studs on cobbles always reminds me of Finland. That and remembering the initial horror of a taxi driver barelling into a corner that appeared to be sheet ice and making it round with no drama.

Yes - first time I was in Iceland I thought there was something wrong with the hire car, so I got out and saw the studded tyres! I grew to love that grip!

In this icy weather I love my Nokia Bogtrotters - studded wellie like boots from when Nokia was a rubber company. The studs are replaceable, as and when they wear out. Excellent grip!

They sold off the footwear division - now sold under the "Nokian" brand, so you can still get them and replacement studs!

Studded tires are allowed in most of Canada for the winter period only except southern Ontario. Some provinces don't outlaw them in the summer either. The new smaller studs came out at least 20 years ago and impart very little damage.

-29C this morning , but starting Fri. warming to -12-15 for the day for almost a week.
