Be careful when buying vacuum tubes

Hi. theese days I am about to spend some money on tube gear. Searching ebay I spot very strange item with insane price.
.
Single Large Triode Tube - De Forest | eBay
.
With more carefull visual inspection of given photos it came out that is NOT in any way the item described in title.
.
That is VT-4-C tube from General electric made in II war era. Surley it is not a 12Kusd?
.
Pleae be careful - and not rush in when bying tubes. Try consult someone with more experiaence and knowlege. I hope this will be of some help?
.
PS
I just could not stand not to by one Leak 12TL+ mono power amplifier yesterday. Same color and else like mine. More than decent amp after replacing old parts. Now I am go to stereo! 😛

The goal of strange listings on sites such as ebay is not necessarily to sell the depicted item at the listed price. It may have been put there to set the reference price for a direct sale negotiation (to show the prospective buyer a puposedly "fair market price"), or to justify a money transaction that has been arranged for a different purpose. Look at the seller feedback: it never sold anything remotely close to this price.

Generally for the DHT units is important:
- to see the tube top in-front of WHITE paper. Not cream-white or darker. To se if the tube was working excessively. IF it is on the glass from the inside top tube will be some grayish-foog. For the rectifiers more.
- The heater wires should be straight and symmetrical. heater wire should be in direct connection only with the holders. The circular springs on the top should be UN-deformed and straight. Preferably not bended in any side and all of the same value-tension.
.
The connection with base could be of interest too. Take a look some tubes are glued in that gap. Especially one with euro base type like AD1 base. And rectifiers more.
.
Some tubes have dark glass from the inside. And in that way we cant see a lot of important things
.
items that clearly showing these spots are probably good and like stated, and most lightly from people who knew things and don't want to full customers... That is some mine point of view.

Looking at that listing I do see a De Forest triode, a GE VT-4C and an 845. The top of each tube is different looking regarding the shape and the amount of sputtering on the ceramic. They also say a revision is coming for price. But regardless of that they're not from this planet. 😀
