Your welcome.

Long ago, in the analog era, digital video recorders were hot.
But not all was engineered perfect, this one had a little problem.
Having a 'powerup', 'reset' and 'sleep' control on the processer, waking up for a timed recording puzzled the processor. So some inner parts were engaging while other remained frozen. The result was a destroyed gearbox, consisting of countless parts.
I've reworked many until a 'delayed crowbar' I inserted on the reset pin prevented this from happening. A diode, small cap and small signal relay were needed to avoid high repair costs.

I rather like the modular nature of modern TVs. Mine (after an altercation with an ex and a poker) needed a new panel. Only a couple of panel makers in the world, so I got a Sony panel off ebay and fitted it to my LG TV. 7 years later the main board went, suspected BGA/lead free problem. I swapped some bits out of another TV we were going to junk anyway and it'll be good for another 5 years. Excellent repairability.

Hello,
Generalizing is ok for products is my opinion.
England, the country which gave us Sturmey- Archer the ones that could be repaired. I had bicycles which served me twice the length of the equator with S.A 3 speed gear. Now you will get 7 speed "" gearbox ". That will break down pretty soon. The 18 year old who just started working in the bicycle shop is told just to replace the complete gear because he probably cant repair it in an hour.
One needs to generalize to make things easy.
Irish people have red hair, always drunk and are pro life. English tourist always drunk too, their food is horrible but there are many great English writers, their pop music used to be good but for good classical music you need to go the continent.
Greetings,Eduard

I went around the world and only got very sick from food poisoning twice (both times in the UK). When I bought a Jamie Oliver pan a few weeks ago I thought : "English food" and then:"that is an excellent pan to make horrible food with". When visiting Dublin it was rainy and cold every day but all blokes (many red haired) were drinking beer in white T-shirts outside in the rain and cold every day :)

You are very right about the 3 speed Sturmey-Archer. Just a cable problem now and then but they never failed on me. Now the aluminium bicycles fall apart and when I ask the bicycle repairman what is OK he points at his 80ies Gazelle. The worst of the bunch are the 7 speed Shimano Nexus and tests revealed one needs more force/power for these compared to the older 3 speed ones. So older tech was more efficient because of ball bearings.

Tefal, who make the Jamie Oliver pan are a French company...

I hated sturmey archer 3 speeds as a kid. Adjusting them to get all 3 gears to work was hell and even then you got 3 gears of little use. Now after my 80s bike finally died I have all italian groupset and every part is replacable and rebuildable. I'll get back to you in 20 years on Al frame life as its my first.

And the English have been proud drunkards for at least 400 years with Europeans grumbling about this. It's either in our DNA or because of the awful food :D

Don't forget the teeth :)

I hated the S.A. 3 speed also as a kid but that was more because no one could adjust the cable right (either me or one of the other kids). Position 2 was OK but position 3 was most of the times too heavy. Position 1 was useless. However it worked in 2. Best was a bicycle with no speeds but everybody thought you were a strange bloke when you had such a bike. When I bring stuff over to the recycling place it hurts my eyes when I see such reliable bicycles being discarded of. Any repair guy tells the same: if you want one that does not break down, find a 80ies steel bicycle before they are gone.

That is why they are excellent :D

Just had a look at: Collegiate | Hybrid Bike for Men and Women | 700c Wheels - Schwinn
– Schwinn Bikes

Chromoly steel frames, eighties look but ... dealbreaker ... eighties brakes and aluminium rims. Roller brakes, stainless steel rims and a hub dynamo and LED lighting (lighting is a must here) would have made it complete. But I think the older ones were all steel and also reliable?

These electric bicycles seem OK but they cost as much as a nice second hand car:

Post 81 : A. G. Bose himself discovered after experimentation with
pulsating spheres or point sources like this that it was the wrong way,
so I read in some old 901 proaganda material. i am not sure that the
speaker in the link was in production or for sale, may be more evidence
is required.
