Face it, when crooks are in a state of mind which entails desperation, their pin-sized brains are not caring about cameras.
The only care in their minds are "the haul", whatever they can get - free.
JMFahey's youtube link, among hoardes of others like it, attest to that fact.
Thieves rob stores all the time, stores with a dozen cameras, other customers around, even security guards.
They just don't care.

True, but having done a good bit of work for investigators and insurance companies pulling video and stills from surveillance cams, I know the value of identifying the people and having solid evidence to take to trial.
I agree Pano..
While it doesn't do much to thwart crime these days, having video does increase the chances of arresting those crooks, as well as visually confirming incidents that happen.
I'm able to confront the sources with clips and prove what happened.
They can't argue or deny, even though they may try.

We are.
I don't wish to concern myself with either signal interruption nor remembering to change the camera batteries.
Mind you, my wire runs are less than 10m so that makes it easy.

Like Cal, I wanted utter reliability with zero maintainance.
Only thing I had to do over 10 years is change the SLA backup battery on the alarm system once.
You can't beat copper wire for reliable signal transfer.

Many answers witch depend of local laws. In some countries, video is a proof, in others it is not. In some, you're allowed to have guns in others you have not access to this ressource. Protection of laws also vary from "you can't protect yourself" to "you're allowed to protect family and house."
Add private reasons (sex, trust, house staff...) and you multiply endlessly reasons to have or not to have cams.

Probably not many except if you don't trust your own family members or partner.
How about the help? Nothing keeps a maid on the straight and narrow as well as both visible and potentially hidden cameras.
Laws........ sometimes they're rediculous, stupid, sometimes they're even dangerous.
In my opinion, a person has the right to live and protect themselves against threats.
Like the animals out in the wild, they also have a fundamental desire to survive and protect their offspring.
You gonna tell a tiger, or a bear, or a monkey that wants to protect their baby cubs that they can't, because of some goofy law?
Good luck with that.
That's going against nature's ways.

OP has not been back in a few days.
This just in: Porch Pirates in Wilmington, NC, caught on camera. Dudes drive up, snag 3 boxes off a porch (resident inside, dogs barking) and zoom off.

One box was toilet paper. The new semi-precious gem.

HAHAHA!
Porch pirates...
That's cute!
Gives rippin off toilet paper a whole new meaning!
Whenever I order anything, it's usually in a box small enough for the postal worker to put behind my storm door, out of view.
And.... if I expect (checking postal website tracking) the package, I keep an eye open.

Sometimes it is just about anxiety...
For instance I'm reassured with hidden private cameras in the sleeping room. I'm sleeping better to know my wife as a stable and long relationship with the neighbor instead time to time strangers. And when he is at work, I'm pretty sure he thinks the same about me and his wife !
So indeed as evolved animals and the right to defend ouserselves, cams had proven to be usefull weapons... Btw I coupled one with a moth-balls gun... some neighbors have no respect for others and come back from travel with moths in their cases... I hate the neighboors that don't respect my pure wool carpets 😡 !
"reassured with hidden private cameras in the sleeping room".....This anxiety is not normal and I hope it is treatable. The word "private" gives it away as it is only there to soften the word "hidden".
I am not sure what a partner will think of this when discovering this (one can simply guess that the partner is not informed). It is food for thought but often the ones that need to be reassured with trust issues are the ones that can not be trusted 🙂

😀... definitly! You understood me. Humor is a powerfull weapon against people that compare themselves with animals to justify to have armory at home and that finish often by murderer the neighboor or a family member at night that just went downstair to drink a glass of milk !
Anxiety is treatable, watching movie helps: The Girl Next Door (2004) - IMDb
Well it is if the pun pill didn't work !

Nice story about the woman with trash. It shows at least one reason to install cameras. People are really nice to you, but you can't be sure there is the same inside or when they speak about you with others. This is their education level, and we can't change that. Unfortunately. I truly recommend you to install security cameras if you live in a house. You do not need them in an apartment, though. Actually, it is better to have a fully-equipped security system, as the Ajax company produces. Oh, you have mentioned them as well. I like their product, I use them for about a year. The only problem is they don't produce cameras, but it is possible to connect any you want/have to that system.
I keep lights on all night in the yard, around the shop and by entry ways I find it's the best deterrent.

I agree. 😉
It used to be impossible to judge a person's character by a chance meeting.
Like walking down the street, passing someone,.... are they an alcoholic?..... a thief?..... a criminal?
You can't really tell.
But today, it's easy to see a person's addictions.....
They're holding and/or staring at a cellphone. 😱
I like the night time to be dark. Fortunately so do many of my neighbors. I feel lucky.I keep lights on all night in the yard, around the shop and by entry ways I find it's the best deterrent.
