Yes, keep in mind that the speakers expect some pressure feedback around the edges. if you make big "wings" you would have to compensate with crossover changes to maintain the balance.

No, I wouldn't mount them in boards, and if I weren't single, I suspect WAF would negate that option even if I wanted to 🙂
Think I'm going to build some "temporary" spider legs for them out of ply so I can make a template for the proper ones. Researching hardwoods for that. As they will be painted, I'm only worried about the hardness of the wood. Not sure I want to go too crazy as it will very much complicate the cutting/finishing of the legs.

Make sure you have the protection boards installed , especially if you are going to be using big amps to drive these

This is very good advise. The treble panels are reliable to everything except too much power.
