Ever have a power supply/transformer fail in mid play?

Yeah, they are a really nice deal. Truly excellent quality at a great price. Plus you probably get free shipping. Lucky bastard.
They are also excellent to deal with if you ever wanted a custom made transformer too. I have some custom Avel Lindbergs, they are great.

Avel-Lindbergs arrived. They are a high quality unit, very tightly wound. Compared to the 500 VA Antek they look like something I would use in a preamp! I know they will do the job no problem, and they should given the higher price.

Also ordered another 500 VA Antek, if my existing one isn't defective, I can always use it. The A-V transformers are for another amp.

Adding rectifiers to parts order to finish SissySit. Will have this figured out soon.

No, I bought two of the 250 VA 18 + 18 pieces. They will be for standard dual mono FirstWatt clone. That is why they are smaller, but also appear to be wired tighter. Of course they are smaller, 1/2 the VA of Antek. I have a pair of Antek 300 VA in a F5, l will compare the Avel-Lindberg unit to them.

Hmmm, maybe I better check out 500 VA units.

Take a photo

Here's some pics of the transformers. The larger transformer is the Antek 500VA I removed from the amp. The other pic shows it compared to one of the Antek 300 VA transformers in F5. Its turned off unplugged and so forth, Avel-Lindburg transformer laid beside it.

The replacement Antek 500 VA transformer is on its way.

Now M2 back in stereo form. One Avel-Lindberg transformer being used temporarily. Only 250 VA, but is dead silent and doesn't seem the least strained.

The replacement 500 VA Antek should be hear in couple more days. M2 in stereo form fired up, all OK for now. I am going to let it cook for a while so I don't get an unpleasant surprise like last time.

The CL-60 (now replaced) is cool to touch and all seems well. But I did get nasty surprise last time I "fixed" it!

Ok, more odd behavior from M2. As it heats up, I was monitoring the bias. as I recall, I thought this amp say around 64 mV? Right now, I watched it slowly climb to 80 mV, and I shut down. This happens in both channels.

I don't know, maybe if I let it go it would settle back down, but when it 80, I thought it best to shut down.

I never clocked this amp as it warmed up, maybe it always did this ad it warms up?

Any one familiar with M2's bias warm up cycle? Not really wanting to put in system yet!

Any ideas or measurement info appreciated.

Been playing great with normal measurements for several cuts. It is about this time when it smoked the CL-60 after the last "repair."

Sounding very good. It will really suck it it repeats now.
Boy these Avel-Lindberg transformers are really nice. Half the VA rating of the Antek it's standing in for yet it doesn't complain on fire up. Another thing just hit me, listening here to the M2 whose iron gain can pick up hum. With the Antek, the amp was very quiet...ear to driver for slight noise. Even less noticeable with the Avel-Lindberg. Really thinking about getting another pair.

Looking hard at transformer, amp ran fine all night with the A-V transformer. Either other transformer is bad or some unnoticed problem got corrected by taking it all apart and putting it back together!

If it runs fine tomorrow, I think it is fixed. I did notice that after running tonight the transformer was darn hot. I could hold it in my hands no problem but it was More than very warm. It is only 250 VA and I ran it pretty hard, so that may have something to do with it.

That is normal, that is why you should use 2 x 250VA assuming you have room, otherwise a single 330VA or higher Avel Lindberg.

Touching transformer and CL60 seems a bit imprudent if they are powered up........😱

It was off, I don't make a habit of reaching around inside of powered up amps, heat gun thermometer tells me what I need to know. Plus, the black surface of the CL-60 isn't conductive, nor are the super insulated winding of a transformer.

Nothing imprudent here!

Thanks, I figured it was fine, but with the problems I had I'm a bit paranoid! I have a 500 VA for it coming from Antek. I think I could get both transformers in this case (Deluxe 4U) vertically but couldn't get two of my current power supply boards in there. I have some smaller Peter Daniels PS boards that are much smaller, but would it ever be too cramped for me.
