Picoreplayer, with its Logitech user interface.
Moode, but wont show album covers due to my ancient router CIFS V1.
Volumio gave me the most problems with my I2C audio circuitry and I gave up after 3 tries with it.
...I need a better router to host my music collection, via USB connected SSD.
Incorrect 🙂 As I noted on the MoOde forum I tested this using a similar router and mount flags :vers=1.0,ro,dir_mode=0777,file_mode=0777
There is something odd about your router setup but I suspect it is the share info not the protocol..😉
Happy to exchange setup details if you want to retry..😀
Best,
Bob
GentooPlayer
Easy installation and much better sound!
Versions for 64Bit RPi4, too.
A very very small distro.

Moode on a RPi3 with an older Allo Boss DAC for bedroom headphone setup
Moode on a RPi3+ with Topping D10 DAC for living room setup
Both are headless, but WiFi won't work on either RPi with a newer v1.2 Allo Boss DAC installed, which is why the Topping D10 DAC is in place in the living room. 🙁

Rune Audio 0.4b on a raspberry pi 3b.
I am not a fan of using my phone or finding the tablet behind the sofa cushions for control so I have it set up as a 'stand alone' with it's own touch screen with a mahogany surround sitting in front of the tele. We find this is more family friendly as our house is small and this is the lounge room & kitchen. It is fed by a small external 0.5Tb USB drive which I update manually every few weeks and it feeds into a Shiit BiFrost DAC. Very happy.
I have recently tried '+R e4' version but because I am quite happy with the 0.4 and the later froze on me a couple of times I couldn't be bothered pursuing it.

Volumio on a Raspberry Pi 3B with a 64 GB USB stick, a HiFiBerry Digi+ S/PDIF interface and a home-made valve DAC. The S/PDIF interface has actually been redundant since I added an I2S interface to the DAC.
Moode installed headless on a RASPI 3 playing through a Schiit DAC on USB. Music DB is on another RASPI using Minimserver.
Uncomplicated to install, developer support on forum is good. Largely controlled through Upnp from an android app I've written, though the WEB UI is perfectly usable. No complaints.

piCorePlayer, highly recommended.
As I owned Logitech Squeezebox: Classic, Duet & Touch piCorePlayer is the direct way for me. Its fits all my needs excepted one: I never succeeded in making a standalone player since piCorePlayer needs an internet connection to boot.

?
You can boot PcP as a standalone player. You can even set it up with a WiFi AP.
I never succeeded to configure rpi3b+/pCP until pCP V.6 as a standalone player with only an usb disk drive attached to it. So what I do, I connect the rpi to Internet with a cable and remove it when rpi3b+/pCP is ready. After that I have a standalone player.
I would be happy to learn how to configure my rpi3b+/pCP as a standalone player. Can you explain how to?

piCorePlayer +1 with IR remote control.
I love the old school feel of having a IR remote to control the music. Plus it's very responsive. I think it's an underrated feature and one I cannot live without for the total music experience.
It was a PITA to setup with third-party remotes, but once I figured out you can emulate old squeezebox native remotes it was downhill. I was never successful getting third-party remotes to work because of likely file permissions issues.
Device Compatibility
MANUFACTURER: Logitech
MODEL NUMBER OR PRODUCT NAME: Squeezebox
The Squeezebox is confirmed with the above search parameters as a working downloadable device compatible with Harmony remotes. From there, it's a simple download of the remote codes.
I then copy and paste from the Harmony remote to a cheap Chinese learning remote.
Very functional and minimalistic with tactile feedback.

Hi guys,
Can we take the piCorePlayer discussions over to this thread.
piCorePlayer = piCore Linux + Raspberry Pi + Squeezelite
or a new topic, we don't want to derail the OP's topic.
regards

Hello,
Nowdays which is the best? Volumio? MoOde? Other?
I have a problem. I'm running a few years old moOde audio version on a PRI3 without problems, but I have tried to install on a RPI4 and it just can not update library. The NAS share disappears uder library after scan. No error in the mpd log, can not root it. I did like MoOde better, but now I do not know.
Maybe I try to get an older version of moOde.
Thanks,
JG

When I purchased the Raspberry Pi and IQaudIO DAC Pro and installed the volumeio OS, I was greated with a persistent failure of network detection. Using another computer I checked for wifi hotspots and found the volumeio OS had created a temporary wifi hotspot. Several attempts to connect has proven to be a waste of time. The volumeio OS seems to assume persistent IP numbers are used instead of DHCP. As my home network uses the latter, I had no other option other than to abandon volumeio. The pity was it took a very long time to finally find an OS which detected the IQaudIO DAC.
I personally stopped using Volumio a long time ago, but connecting to a network was never an issue. You connect to the hotspot and open the interface (which is the only tricky part as the volumio.local address does not work correctly), ask it to scan for new networks and put in the password. If you do need a static IP, you can assign it once it is hooked up to your network. DHCP is the default.
I find with new versions it got more and more resource-hungry, to the point that it does not even load on Pi Zero. And on the Pi3 it takes eons to turn on and present its interface. For critical locations I prefer using Daphile, and for casual listening I use Squeezelite on top of DietPi, hooked up to one 24x7 Raspberry Pi running LMS. All of it is controlled using Squeezer on my phone, and a PC is used to make any complex setup changes.
