The Well Tempered Master Clock - Group buy

Hi Andrea,

I am very happy that the new designs are ready and am looking forward to using these as the best sounding cutting edge clock units available!
I have one SC-cut Driscoll clock unit functional (without oven) and this one is so much better than all other clocks I have heard.

Are the new TWTMC-DRIXO-F New Driscoll XO suitable for the HC-47/U size crystals?

Is it also possible to buy finished Driscoll boards(old designs) for SC-cut 45 and 49 Mhz crystals? I had no luck building mine (you might remember).

What would be the best, lowest jitter, solution: 11,28Mhz crystal with frequency doubler or 22,57Mhz crystal?
Regards,

I am interested but I do not know what I need to list if I wanted these for Ian’s FiFoPi?

Could someone assist me please? Thank you

Hi,

Depending on the maximum frequency you need, but it could be something like this for the fifopi:
2x TWTMC-DRIXO-F New Driscoll XO (without crystal) 120,00
1x TWTMC-STS-SX Sine to square converter (SX) 16,00
1x TWTMC-STS-DX Sine to square converter (DX) 16,00
2x crystals SC-cut, frequency of your preference.
optional 2x TWTMC-DBM-F Frequency doubler 80,00

If you need good power supply you can opt for the regulator. I use the Ian Canada battery supply for the fifopi and clock units.

Regards,

Regards,

Unfortunately none of the older versions are available as finished board.

About the choice between 22 MHz and 11 MHz with doubler, please wait for the final phase noise plots. Coming soon!

Some hints ...

Some hints to choice the best option:

- get oscillators at the lowest frequency as possible, keep in mind that the best phase noise performance is reached with SC-Cut 5/6 MHz crystals

- if your setup require higher clock frequency than 5/6 MHz, choice anyway the lowest frequency to get your system working. About the options of crystals at higher frequency or 5/6 MHz crystals with one or more doubler, please wait until the final phase plots will be published. BTW, I suspect that the best option will be 5/6 MHz oscillators with multiplier

- if you have one, power the oscillators with LiFePo4 battery (no super capacitors, they are useless for these applications). Otherwise get a true ultra low noise regulators, since the noise from the power supply heavily affects the close-in phase noise

- if you are using one of the Ian's recloker boads (Dual XO, MC Dual XO or Fifopi), you need one sine to square converter for each frequency. SX od DX type depends on Ian's device you are using, please see the picture I have published. All the new oscillators except the Pierce gate based are sine wave output, so you cannot drive Ian's boards directly

Enjoy!

Do SX/DX only comes assembled or is there a raw pcb option ?

WRT multiplying up from 5/6MHz, assuming the multiplier has as low phase noise possible, this should be the best option.

I am assuming the regulator does not require super low OP Z as opposed to VL noise.

- WRT multiplier, does it OP square wave or sine wave? You have mentioned
something about this previously. Or were you referring to the multiplier requiring a sine wave IP then sine -> square conv last.

- Did you do phase noise measurements of sine to squ conv?

- WRT bare (unpopulated) PCB's, are there any adjustments required or hard to source parts?

- Do you have ability to perform Allan Dev measurements?

Thanks

I assume that multiplied oscillators will perform better than oscillator with crystals at the oscillation frequency, but obviously we have to wait for the finale measurement. There will be enough time to place orders as soon as the final measurement will be published.

Low frequency noise coming from the power supply modulates the oscillator so it affects the close-in phase noise, that's the reason I suggest batteries (disconnected from main AC line when operates). BTW the oscillators should never power off, that's the reason our announced battery system will provide external supply to the oscillators when it re-charges the battery.

Frequency doubler accepts sine wave only and outputs sine wave. Sine to square is the last section.

We have not yet measured the phase noise at the output of the squarer, but it will be done.
Next months we will provide one more sine to square converter with better performance and obviously much more expensive. It's a very complex converter that will not fit Ian's board.

For all the devices we are looking for the SOTA, so don't expect prices similar to Ian's stuff.
Indeed the new Driscoll and Differential oscillators are the best devices ever built for digital audio, including commercial products.

The new oscillators don't need any settings, and no hard to source parts, except for the Mini-Circuits transformers that require MOQ of 20 pcs, that's the reason we will provide them in the GB.

We have done Allan Deviation measurement for the new Driscoll, and obviously it's not comparable with Oscilloquartz or Wenzel oscillators because there is not an oven. With a single oven also the Allan Deviation is very good, but since in audio we are looking for the best short term stability we decide to avoid the complexity of the oven (electrical and mechanical), since the measured phase noise in both situation is exactly the same.

Me neither. I believe to understand that the transformers are included with the finished boards, and you only want to order them separately if you are going with the raw boards. But I am not sure.

The transformers kit (it's not a board) is for those who mount the oscillator himself, finished oscillators have the transformers on board.
We provide the kit because Mini-Circuits asks MOQ for each device.
You are free to buy them yourself but you have to buy 20 pcs for each transformer type.

Yes, Fifopi needs 1 x SX and 1 x DX.
MC Dual XO also need 1 x SX and 1 x DX.
While Dual XO needs 2 x SX.

About the option between high frequency crystal and low frequency with multiplier, please wait for the final measurement.

Hello Andrea,
i'm very interested in your oscillators but i'm new here and i can't understand how they are implemented. Sorry i'm scared by having to read hundred of pages to get updated...

Could you please explain what is included in a finished PCB and what is still needed?
Are transformers included in finished PCBs? And sine to square converters? And PSUs?
Are frequency doublers and sine to square converters needed one for each clock or can we use single ones operating on the selected output frequency?
How is frequency selection operated?
Are your battery PSU boards coming soon (before the GB will be closed)?

Thank you

Me neither. I believe to understand that the transformers are included with the finished boards, and you only want to order them separately if you are going with the raw boards. But I am not sure.

Am I correct the sine/square convertersion for a FiFoPi needs 1 x SX board and 1 x SD board?

For high-res support: Is it better to use low-frequency crystals with several frequency doubler boards, or use a higher frequency crystal to start with?

The question of two serie doubler is a good one. I bet Andrea will perform measurments to know the better trade offs. Yes a SX and DX needed for FifoPi due to the fliped patern of one socket area vs the older Ian's clok boards. I assue 2 x sin converter needed as well : one for each socket as the new oscillators boards are standalone frequency : basicly all needs to be x2 for using both frequency or choose your poison -I chosed as I'm mainly Red-Book and use a 16 bits old dac chip-
