To Heil AMT or not to Heil at $140, that is the question?

I am a fan of 2 way designs in general. I think the big AMT paired with a good woofer is just about as good as it gets ... no mid required.

It's hard to get big woofers that play well at a healthy XO where the Heil isn't the limiting factor for output (and the woofer for S.Q.), so I get why people would want 3 ways. The best setup I had was with a dual 6.5" without an enclosure sitting above the heil (suspended in free air). It was a wonky solution but sounded quite good, with a 15" below (that DID have an enclosure.)

badman, interesting you mention that design....have you seen these? Trio15 Heil, feat. ESS Heil AMT 1 – PureAudioProject

Has anyone heard these? The design, construction and materials look 1st class. I'm glad to see another new commercial design using the Heil. The site says a professional review has been done and should be published soon.

I've wondered about using midrange drivers and the Heil in an open baffle design with
subs. What 6.5s were you using? A high efficiency driver with punch from 70 to 2k could have potential.

Follow-up to last post. Some of you will find this very interesting. The guys making these OB Heil speakers have a "beta group" and are looking for folks with interest and experience to assist with the Heil application and development. I'm sure some of you could really contribute to this.

PureAudioProject – Open Baffle Speakers, Drivers and more.. .....details of the beta group are under the heading "blogs and more" check it out.

I'm not familiar but the spacing is on the high side, and would lend itself much better to a DSP solution than the passive crossovers. The 6.5"s were "MaxSpeakers PR65NEO", pro mids. As they were operated without enclosures, they were filling in from about 500hz-1200hz.

This Heil AMT1 is really interesting technology! I ordered a matched pair and cannot wait to try out out. I want to use it two way with a 15" PAP Neo woofer. Or maybe three way ...

In the meantime, I have had the AMTs running for quite some weeks. I started to use them as a sort of super tweeter. The very first impression was so so, but the unit needed to break in and I especially used too cheap and gritty caps. After changing to Audyn plus caps, the sound was much better. It added quite some transparency to my Supravoxes. Recently I let the AMTs running lower, first order at 2.3 kHz. Better sound. Finally I started rolling off the Supravox bicones first order around that freq. Now, sound is
Much improved transparency, dynamic and imaging. While also warm and natural. Nice textures and color.
Really love the units already, I wonder how much potential there still is by improving the filters. E.g. by going lower and using higher order filtering. To be continued...

I'm running mine at 800Hz/24dB .. they can handle it if you don't run crazy volume.

Has anyone with a large AMT built or heard something wherein the AMT is used in a closed back enclosure? Like the big AMT bookshelf monitors (I've never heard them).

I bought a pair of the great heils and I am in the process of designing a near-wall monitor, and I am wondering if I am giving up all that supposed ESS AMT magic by placing them in boxes...

I would place them in a good size midrange-esque enclosure with lots of damping and/or irregular shaped walls, etc...

In the meantime, I have the AMTs crossed over just below 1 kHz with 24 dB slope. For bass, I still use the 15" neo. The drivers are actively driven and equalized with Hypex fusion plate amps, great stuff. This combination works much better than anticipated. Still, I want to try out what a mid driver in between can bring. Once I have the time I want to start with my Supravox bicone, e.g. from 250 Hz to about 2k, but I am also looking for alteratives with potentially better sound...

I also use 2x 20 uF parallel to protect my AMT. It affects definitely its sound by reducing transparency a bit, but also sweetens up the sound somewhat.

Regarding mid, a candidate is the Audax PR170mo. Anyone experience using this with the Heil? Is it still recommendable today or are there better alternatives?

What do you guys think of a line-array with 6-8 big Heils on each side with a bass column beside each a la Infinity? Now you have great dispersion and output

There is a thread on the Klipsch forum about using 2 per side with added wings to extend the response lower, with good results. A stack of four should be really great. Heck, go floor to ceiling with 'em! And invite me over when they are done!

If your desire is 1st order, get youself a hand full of cheap electrolytic's 2uf a 3uf 4 ,it will be not higher than 4 guaranteed , than get yourself quality polypropylene capacitors .remember it's a tweeter not a midrange ,if you need mids get separate midrange , and the heil is a 3ohm tweeter ,so two 3ohm mills resistors should be used
