Peugeot Partner, bad sound.

My colleague have a Peugeot Partner and he is complaining about the sound, and asked for help.
I made a fast search and it looks like he's not alone with this issue.

Usually I build Hi-Fi and PA speakers and in the cars I've been involved with I have used about the same drivers.
I like high SPL drivers, not fond of these extreme X-max drivers, and for the doors it looks like a 6.5 inch will fit.
Is there anyone out here that's been working with these cars and have a solution ?

How old is the peugeot partner? My S16 the foam surrounds on the drivers completely disintegrated resulting in bad distortion.

The partner being a commercial varient most likely doesn't have the best drivers fitted. The front speakers in a standard 306 are very shallow, and I would not be surprised if it is the same with the partner (since they are based off the same base platform) That may not be such an issue if you don't care about keeping a stock appearance.

Tony.

Thank's for all replys.
The car is a 2019 model. As many of you say I also belive that drivers are crap, and maybe one should fit a nice head unit.
As it's many years since I was in this business, I have some questions:
Are there head units that will fit, they tend to be customized for every brand/model ?
I guess that one needs special adapters to be able to mount new drivers ?

Best Regards

You will be surprised what new stuff has been incorporated in car electronics. (and what has been done to secure vendor lock in 😉) A simple thing as a antenna has been made complex just as CAN bus systems that only "recognise" original radios etc. Steering wheel control may be analog and the new head unit may be digital so you then need a "box" to translate etc etc. This is all brand and type specific too.

So: the passive stuff can be done while using old knowledge (speakers). As always please use crimping and not soldering when fitting new speakers. Simplest is to use the original cabling and just replace the speakers for quality stuff that fits physically (this might be a challenge). Just click the connectors on the new units and you are done. Terminatore gave a nice link to stuff that will fit and sound OK at an affordable price. Probably other options cost more time and money with possible less optimal results.

Concerning the electronics side: it is advisable to either read yourself into it or have someone look at it that has knowledge of recent developments.

When confronted with matters as these I normally inspect what the car is equipped with and I go to a dealer to see what "original" options there are. Do not expect the dealer to have specific information, you will need to look carefully yourself. In most of the cases I think prices are absurd and then I find compatible stuff at so called car tuning companies. Often the display is the display of the car itself which of course will not work anymore when choosing a not optimal adapted head unit. I don't know the Partner 2019 but just some general info as your suspicions are in the right direction. You will likely also find out that choosing the car with better sound options straight away often is the easiest method.

Car stock speakers are usually crap unless You buy an expensive car. Im my VW Golf (Rabbit) I fitted Focal speakers and a Alpine Head unit.

Uh-uh.
My MB C250CDI came with an original sound system so bad I couldn't believe my ears. Of course, there's the optional Burgmeister for $1500, thank you very much. I replaced the original tweeter with a JBL, and that's an improvement of some sort, and one day I'll work up the courage to remove the door lining and replace the woofer; but I'm such a lousy mechanic... 🙂

No, even worse a Renault. Bought it one month ago. Good sound quality from the original radio and speakers though.

One of the best cars I ever owned was a Peugeot 106 Diesel. Despite various other types that were unreliable this 106 was built like a tractor.

Exactly this company is responsable for undeserved bad reputation of all Diesel cars and Diesel technology in general but of course you know this.

Anyway this is off topic. Let’s not divert to eco or green discussion as I was working in various fields of green technology. Keep believing the mantra “electric = green” 😀

Back to the subject please.

Maybe you haven’t heard (which I doubt) but these scammers were involved in a scandal so no 🙂. Exactly this company is responsable for undeserved bad reputation of all Diesel cars and Diesel technology in general.

I was not talking about ecology, high compression motors are the enemy of the in car acoustic comfort and the point that the diesel owners need more SPL especially in the lows, it is only physics.

Personally I don't care too much for best possible sound quality in such a noisy and illogical environment (it's like wanting good sound in a bathroom to me) but there is a red line somewhere under which irritation becomes the driving factor. Some A branded cars have truly bad sound which is not in line with their price. In this day and age of technological developments and outsourcing to China it strikes me when sound quality is not even mediocre. As a critical consumer I would not buy such a product even if they try to seduce me with their best marketing and brand loyalty BS.

My previous car was heavily pimped by the previous owner and several 1000s of Euros were spent on speakers, an added subwoofer, a 2 DIN Alpine head unit with DSP, heavy amplifiers and damping. It did not make a Euro difference in sales value which goes to show. It was HiFi but only so when I did not start the car 😉
