I thought I was the only one who shaved off the beard. Kept a goatee but the CDC calls it a circle beard. Who am I to question the CDC??? Looking at it I guess I'll have to cut some more off.... 🙁

I've uploaded a facial hair/mask guide from the CDC. I'd like to point out the Zappa. The man has left his mark! I had tickets to see Dweezil Zappa perform Hot Rats (Frank's best LP) this month and, of course, it's cancelled.

I like the names they gave to them! Never knew Mr. Hitler had a 'toothbrush' but I can see the logic.

These were used only to shield an inadvertant face-touch. One person I actually witnessed fiddling with the face mask - the exact thing they said wearing one tends to make you do. Which is dangerous...

That's a good point and one that was made against wearing a mask.

Your efforts are commendable. Perhaps also not wearing one would make one more mindful of oneself and those around you. I've found I've been very conscious of trying not to touch my face and washing my hands as soon as I get home.

Take it for what you will, but just to bring this thing to any kind of realistic perspective and perhaps, hopefully to appease the most panicky individuals:

-Tuberculosis kills more than a million people per year.
-Common influenza kills more than 600000 people per year.
-Malaria kills more than 400000 people per year.
-HIV kills more than 700000 people per year.
-Smoking kills 8 million people per year. 1.2 million of those are non-smokers.
-And while not directly contagious, obesity kills 2.8 million people per year.

And so on and so on.

Take it for what you will
I take this as proof that you cannot or are unwilling to do mathematics. And that you somehow are saying why is everyone so excited about this stupid virus? But I could be wrong. Please tell us what you are trying to tell us?

If no measures were taken the current virus being between 7 and 34 times (current estimates) more deadly than common influenza would lead to between 4 and 20 million people per year. The upper end would lead to more deaths than your little list together.

So the question is why does this COVID-19 cause so much panic? Maybe it is because it comes so quick and overwhelming. The deaths you mention are spread out in time and are not particularly visible, but as you can see in Italy, COVID-19 comes so fast and thick that it overwhelms the medical system and you get those army trucks in the streets, transporting coffins.

We are not able to consider this logically.

That is not what I am saying but feel free to interpret things in any way you wish. Are you saying that it is reasonable for people to fight over toilet paper at supermarkets, hoard perishables etc?

Be fair -Bas Horneman did ask which way you meant it; in the context that mentioned above, you're surely right it isn't reasonable.

Overall there is a number of experts (reals ones obviously) who don't agree on the meaning of the numbers and still think the measures taken against further spreading are way over the top. The argument is often based on the assumption that the fatality rate is overestimated due to sampling problems.

That might be correct, but it is an assumption and if you want to look at it as a bet, you've to decide on which set of assumptions you'll place your stake.

Even if the mortality rate isn't higher than the flu rate it is an additional one that comes as burden on the health system. Up to now it seems that the normal flu is way less severe this year and social distancing should work against spreading of flu as well.

From what I have observed, many people simply choose to be unreasonable, fight over nonsense, hoard wealth etc. Nothing to do with pandemic or anything in particular. 🙁

True that too. It's just that right now it seems to be trending.

I've always thought the DIYAudio community is smarter than the average forum, but I guess I owe to draw a picture what was the point of the post that made some of you go nuts. The whole point is that panicky behaviour isn't helping anyone. Not you, not anyone else either. Just stop that!

From what I've read, most European governments have taken reasonable measures to beat the disease. Just follow their instructions and that's it. That's is the best you can do. The point of that list is to show that we are constantly surrounded by deadly disease but people don't panic over those either. Why? Because we're used to them. This new virus is indeed new and no-one knows enough about it to draw long term conclusions. Not even the experts. It certainly doesn't help to go ballistic over it.

Is this a serious disease? Yes it is, as are all the things I listed above.
